The 61 289 has a damper, is this a harmonic balancer? does it have to be rebuilt or as long as it is on there it's ok. other then the pully what's it's purpose?

It's a damper, used to damp out vibrations in the crankshaft. It's a simple steel plate on your engine and needs no rebuilding unlike the two piece cast unit with bonded rubber like on the Avanti engines. Your should replace the two rubber inserts that go on either side of the plate.

      JDP is basically correct.
I only say "basically"...because replacing the rubber sheets sandwitched within the three pieces of steel..."would" consitute a "rebuild"!

      Names I've heard -
      1. Damper (correct term)
      2. Dampener (incorrect, this is a verb, not a noun!)
      3. Harmonic balancer (sorta correct)
      4. Vibration damper / dampener (not really, vibration isn't what's going on.
      5. Torsional damper (correct, torsional movement rather than vibration is what happening to the crank).

I'm sure Ive heard more...just can't think of any more right now.
