Normally, birds fly south for the winter. However, today my camera caught a picture of these three hawks hibernating for the winter. (57GH, 58 PH and 55 Speedster). An unusual sight.

I also finally also got Mighty Hawk (63GT) back from the painter where it has been since April. It is dirty, but the water hose is frozen - I'll have to wait for a warm day.

Sweet. Looking great, Paul. Mine's nested for the winter. I have some tires for you, and a speedo cable. Don't pee into the wind. It'll be more than the garden hose frozen (lol).

That's because you have them in captivity. Otherwise, they'd be elsewhere!

Thank you, Dave. How is the snow up there? I forgot to take out a battery.

Re: Chrome reverse. My dad 's idea. I once advised him that he would lose many judging points for them, but he smiled and said "Doesn't it look like it goes faster?" I had to agree.

Yes, the gold 57 GH was purchased in Jan from a forum member. Too many things on the go this summer to finish.

Captivity perhaps - I've clipped their wings by removing the batteries and putting them on trickle charge.

Chrome reverse?? Is that something to do with the wheels?

warrlaw1

Yup. Reversing the wheels gave a slightly wider track, and often voided warrantees on tie rod ends and other steering parts. Chrome them, then reverse them... was a CASO way of hot rodding. Baby moons added nice effects.

The wheels are also mentioned in a line from Jan & Deans "Drag City" song:

Drag City
Burn up that quarter mile
Just tuned my car, now she really peels
A lookin' real tough with chrome reverse wheels
A blue coral wax job sure looks pretty
Gonna get my chick and make it out to Drag City

So a cheap way to get some reverse offset wheels? Huh, so they just put chrome steelies on backwards? I've thought about it before but didn't know if it would screw something up.

Hey Paul, when your Hawks finally catch flight, try to keep them out of their regular migratory pattern to avoid Ontario's government mandated bird choppers.

You don't bolt them on backward.. The center of the wheel is welded into the rim backwards,or "reversed".-Then,chromed.

At one point, purpose-built chrome reverse wheels were sold by Canadian Tire. (The holes for the wheel nuts have the bevel going out so it fits the nuts properly). Many years ago, they stopped selling them, but my dad made up several sets by picking them up as singles in their bargain bin.

Hey Bill: Have we had any club issues with the bird choppers? I like to drive on nice highways at normal speeds, so I sold my nice 1939 Champion and am keeping the cars that can DRIVE.

Those Packard Hawks are pretty darn rare.......What shape is Yours in? What's the body #?

I actually have 2 PHs. This one is pretty much original with 56K miles. The other one has had the motor and body redone, but could use a better interior. Another project.

Chrome Reversed Wheels are my favorite too....on almost anything !
I have them on three of my hot rods.
Wheels Vintiques still sell them at a very reasonable price (under $100.00) in a number of different styles from traditional to smoothies.
Caps are cheap too, and again a number of different offerings.
Sure hope those Hawks get to stretch their wing a lot when the snow goes!!
Good Roads
