  • '55 Commander Coupe

This Commander is 15 mins. from me.
Original owner, stills drives it, flathead 6, standard.
The last time I spoke with the owner ( 3 yrs. ago ) about his car he wanted $6000.
At that time I felt it needed a complete body off resto. He decided he wasn't selling, but I see it's for sale once again.
I haven't spoken with him about the car this go around, so not sure if he's lowered his price, but the car has deteriorated somewhat somemore.
I would like to get my hands on it, but not for $6000.

That's leaves reflected in the glass you see on the floor.

If it is a six, how is it a Commander? Unless an engine change, I see it has V8 symbols and Commander signage so the owner (or someone) must have changed engines.

Sits up nice and high at the front like a six would!

Putting a little more thought into the matter, it is easy on these cars to turn it from a Champion in to a Commander, engine change aside. The nameplates are changed, the decklid "S" is replaced with the "8", among other things. The big indicator if it was originally a Champion, would be the body tag. Body tags with the prefix that indicate 16G6- would be a Champion. Body tags with a 16G8- would indicate a Commander. If that's not enough, there's also the serial number on the door jamb on the driver's post, which a production order can be derived from.

I thought it WAS a Champion, till I saw the trunk badges.
Again thanks ..... I'll be looking closely at those tags.

Oh Oh!..... Do I spy a V8 emblem between those big '55 dash gauge pods?

Looking at the trunk lid...looks like someone has swiped the back-up lights.

With that Commander Dash, Decklid V8 Emblem, and "Commander" Trunk Handle etc. I am pretty sure it is or at least WAS a Commander V8!

This one however, is going to take A LOT of rust repair to save it.

The 55 hardtop Peterson just sold is 3 times the car at 1/3 the price.

There's the rub! Certainly, this one would need serious scrutiny. And then...harsh negotiation.

Like I said $6000 .... not likely ... the owner is dreaming.
I think it has to do with sentiment .... he's had the car since getting married.
