Does anyone know when Studebaker started to use superchargers and what year and car models used superchargers up to their going out of U.S. production? I think it started in 1957 and ended in 1964, but what about intervening years and what model supercharger was used during these years? I was asked this at a recent show. Ken, Deltaville, Va

It was also available for the 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk (with Packard V8) as an option: http://www.1956goldenhawk.com/superchg.htmsigpic

I assume that, for the 56 GH, supercharger was a non factory add on. "Handful" would be an understatement, I've had three in the last 18 years and they were never over about 50 MPH. Thanks to all for info. Ken, Deltaville, Va

The question was:
Does anyone know when Studebaker started to use superchargers and what year and car models used superchargers up to their going out of U.S. production?
1957 and 1958 Golden Hawks
1957 Packards
1958 Packard Hawk
1963 and 1964 Lark, Hawk and Avanti equipped with R2 or R3 engines.
And yes, the later non-Studebaker Avanti offered the Paxton supercharger as a special order option for the Chevy V8.
Anything else, including that '56J and a ski boat with a supercharged Packard, was an dealer/owner added aftermarket kit. Since the McCulloch/Paxton came on the aftermarket, I've seen '53 and up Studebaker V8s using the McCulloch kits and both a Champion and a Commander 6-cyl using owner-built parts. Someone has probably put a supercharger on an OHV6; I just haven't seen it personally.
Howevermuch one tries to accurately answer that question at a show, there will be someone who remembers his uncle who owned a Studebaker with the special ordered Packard Caribbean engine and the McCulloch supercharger and it never lost a race until the uncle ran it off into a corn field at more than 136 MPH.

McCulloch/Paxton (Granatelli) also marketed a kit in the 50's to install a McCulloch on several different models of cars. One local guy here has a '54 Ford that has one of their aftermarket kits on it.Frank van Doorn

Getting way, way off topic of what Studebaker offered, but the 1954 Kaiser Manhattan was first to offer a McCulloch as standard equipment and the '57 Ford and Thunderbird offered the McCulloch as a performance option. So very few were built, the F-code supercharged cars are now the most desirable and expensive of the '57 Ford/Tbirds.
