Hello All!
This is the second time I have attempted to post, and for some reason my computer saw fit not to let this post the first time! Love technology! Anyway, I have been away from Studebakers for quite some time and this last weekend I was able to get back to my 61' Lark. I was able to get the car started and it seems that it is in need of a tune up. I was able to get ahold of a shop manual for the 112 HP OHV 6 cylinder engine that is in my car. According to the shop manual the following steps will adjust the timing:
- Disconnect vacuum advance pipe at the carburetor and install a temprary plug
- Use a tachometer to set engine idle at 550 RPM (setting is for six cylinder)
- With engine running, timing light should show index mark nearest to IGN mark under pointer
- If not, loosen clamp screw and rotate distributor unti index mark nearest to IGN is under the pointer
- Readjust engine idle speed to 550 RPM
What I fail to recall is:
- Are you suppose to set the engine idle while the car is in drive or in park?
- Are you suppose to set the timing while the car is in drive or in park?
- Finally, how do you adjust the engine idle speed?
I have the following tools:
- Timing light
- Tach/dwell meter
- Vacuum gage
Other details:
- Carter carburetor AS model
- Automatic transmission
I would appreciate any help on getting my Lark running in peak performance.
Thank you
UPDATE*****
I was able to get the dwell set to about 39 degrees for which the book calls for between 38-40 degrees. I am now at the point of setting the RPM to 550 RPM but when I try this I can't get the engine to rev down any lower than 700 RPM. I have tried adjusting the idle mixture and idle speed screw with no sucess. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be great.
Thank you
