  • Transmission / Overdrive: 1st gear start?

I have an NOS automatic transmission control valve, part number 1542992.

On the outside of it's box someone wrote 1st gear start.

How can I tell if that is so?

    Thanks

    Paul

That number is for '57 Commander and President, and should not be a 1st gear start. It's possible that it is an early '56 1st gear start valve body that was changed out and placed in the new box.
A 1542992 should have a numeral 2 stamped on the lower valve body cover.

I have one more, number 1553011.
Seems to be for police or taxy, six cylinder.
Is this a first gear start, if so can it be used in a V8?

It is for a six, '61-'62, and some '63-'64, and it would be 1st gear start. It's listed as H.D. some years, std. in other years. I'm sure it could be used in a V8, but I think you should check with John Metzker first for any other details.

Paul, you need to tell us what year Stude you are working on. I'm thinking '55. If it is a '55, I have the old valve body I removed from my '55 Pres. (due to no reverse) several years ago in the box the new one came in. I can check the box for any numbers that may be on it.

1955 Studebaker used the Detroit Gear style transmissions DG250 etc.
Nothing interchanges with the 1956 and later.(flightomatic)
Part numbers starting with 15 are 1956 and later except some "improved"parts
that replaced older items received the 7 digit (15-up)numbers.

I was given information on converting 57 control valves to 1st gear start by my friend Kent Fedor.

In the 55 - 59 Chassis manual on page 318 plate 08-20 shows
illustration 0832-49 second gear start spring and
              illustration 0832-47 first start spring.
On these valve bodies, SASCO just used the first start spring on some control valves, converting them to 1st gear start.

These can be used on all later 56-64 V8 flight-o-matics.
This is why mine was marked first gear start on the box.

This procedure does not work on 58 and later model valve bodies.
