  • Studebaker, Seller of fine...Tractors??

Another rumor, this one from the November 23, 1959 edition of Automtive News:

    S-P Eyes Oliver
Studebaker-Packard is holding discussions which may lead to the biggest acquisiition of the firms diversifiction program - the purchase of the Oliver Corp's farm-equipment business.
The boards of S-P and Oliver met last week to hear reports on the negotiations and approved continued "exploratory conversations."
The deal reportedly would see S-P exchanging common stock and cash for four Oliver plants in the farm equipment business.

Well, we know this didn't go anywhere, but interesting to see what Stude was thinking at the time.

I was thinking they could acquire a company that was literally in their backyard, but they were in as bad a shape financially as Studebaker.

Oliver was acquired in 1960 by White, a company that Studebaker had attempted to merge with in the Depression. In addition to founding the White Motor Company, Rollin White had also founded Cletrac tractors which Oliver later bought in 1944. White went on to purchase Cockstutt and Minneapolis-Moline and all were merged under the White name by 1975.
