  • Transmission / Overdrive: 58 Packard transmission woes

Finally after almost a year I got to drive my car on the road,I had good enough brakes and all so I could. The trans was fine in the driveway and parking lot but it has no high gear at all, shifts into...nothing.Sure put a damper on my much anticipated maiden voyage.Anyone have any input on this??

Are you checking the fluid level with the engine running? Check the trans. linkage to the throttle pedal.

I never got it out of low gear, just moving it around at the shop. I have had it a year but it's been an on and off process to try to get it on the road.

The trans may require some work.....but that Packard Hawk engine should (hopefully) still be in A#1 condition !

Was the transmission ever rebuilt? If so, it sounds like the rear sprague is installed backwards (direction of rotation). The stock sprague has brass drag strips, (to reduce clunks while shifting), they need to face to the rear of the car.

VERY doubtful the trans in this wagon was ever rebuilt.

You'll need a gauge to check pressures. Normal linkage adjustment may not apply. Get out service manuel, with supercharger your dealing with a different breed.

In regards to checking the AT fluid level.....I believe the Owners Manual as well as the Shop Manual, states to check with the engine running, the fluid at normal operating temperature, and the gear selector in the DRIVE position. If it not in drive, the fluid level will be at a higher level. In drive, the fluid is in full circulation. Just an extra thought. Hope this helps.

Check with the Packard crowd to be sure; word is that a Mopar TorqueFlite is a relatively easy swap..........
