Why did Studebaker use low compression ratios for it's Truck engines. Is there any advantage to this? Just curious.

In a few words, lugging power and durability.
A lower compression engine will pull hard at full throttle at lower RPMs. It tolerates a lazy or incompetent driver. A higher compression engine when subjected to the same low RPM load will buck, ping and detonate.
The higher compression engine will make more horsepower at higher RPMs, have better fuel economy. At some point in increasing compression, premium fuel, then racing fuel becomes necessary.
