  • One should always carry extra oil !!! but like this ??

Opened the hood of the 49 to take some pictures and this is what I found on the fire wall, do you think this is a dealer option? and what would you do with it?

I love it it's just what I imagen some old timer would do to save time and effort.

It was common in Vintage and Veteran cars to have an oil can mounted to the firewall. Both my 1916 and 1925 Studebakers have them as standard equipment.

Great location for the oil can. If it were mine, I would make sure to put a drop on the heater valve every time I opened the hood. Still, it probably wouldn't be enough!

Looks like it would fit well on the cowl of a 64 Hawk

Does the distributor shaft have an oil cup on it? My 64 does. I think I read that it should be lubed every thousand miles.

My 6V generator has an oil cup. Hood hinges could always use a squirt. Tells us the car was maintained well at some point. Good find, Bob.

I know as I use one with a flex head all the time when trying to fill the cyl. holes on a stuck engine, just fill the can with Marvel Mystery oil and put in as much as the hole will hold.

For sure that was added by some old timer who always had old cars with oil cans as standard equipment!!

That is, indeed, old school. Can you imagine a driver today adding that item before expending on a coffee can tail pipe or "ground effects package"?

Maybe the car was hard to start after it sat for awhile and the can was filled with gasoline to prime the carb??? Just a thought.
