Valve tic

I have been told Studebakers with the mechanical lifters will tic. Is this a tic on acceleration and no tic on deacceleration?

If the valve clearance is loose it will tic whenever the motor is running.

A noise that changes with load is likely not a valve, more likely an exhaust leak or a loose rod bearing. Yes the valves will tick a little but when properly adjusted it's barely audible from inside the car (probably inaudible if you have carpets and a hood pad.)

I just found an exhaust leak, the line from the manifold to the choke. Pull the spring down tight on that line. Is there a gasket? I saw none. I do not sense an exhaust leak. I will try 'yellow feather' out as we are taking her out for supper.

There should not be exhaust gas in that tube, need to pull the intake manifold and repair.

There are two tubes, one to the choke and one to the carb.

Nate the tic did go away. It was not a deep bearing sound to me, it was a tin tin tic.

the tubes in the manifold are just supposed to be there to heat atmospheric air for the choke mechanism, if there's exhaust coming out of there that means the tube down in the manifold has corroded through and needs to be patched, this will corrode your choke mechanism if left like this too long.
