  • Truth in advertising! "Well, that's how it's spelled. Look."

    Can you say "Fake?"
I was just ready to place a bid on this. Then I took one closer look. Glad I did.

Zoom on picture 5. (If you don't get it, it'll eventually come to you. If not, ask someone...)

I clicked on the link and see that someone bought it. The face might have been fake, but the movement looked legitimate. That link led me to do a search for South Bend watches and there seems to be an eBayer in Georgia unloading an entire collection. There are about twenty-five South Bend Studebaker watches from the Georgia eBayer. Anybody we know?

Ah, a rare mis-strike like a U.S. Coin worth about a hundred times as much as a regular one!

But a South Bend watch with a poor replacement face is a South Bend watch, same Co. later bought by Studebaker.

Actually it didn't beome the South Bend Watch Co till Clement III bought the company. He and investors bought the failing Columbus Watch Co and moved it to South Bend. They did however make South Bend watches with no Studebaker markings and of course the Studebaker watches. Check out the new book Ernie Loga just put out on the history of the company and their products.

Several of his watches have Studebaker faces or are advertised as Studebaker when they are plain South Bend watches.
All Studebaker watches are South Bend but not all South Bend watches are "The Studebaker". The face and works should both be marked.

Wasn't part of the North American Studebaker story that the name (spelling) was changed by immigration when the family first immigrated here?

It was but I've never seen it with the extra R. I've seen Stutenbecker, Stutenbaker and a couple of other variations. In one of the South Bend cemetaries there's a Studebaker (with a different spelling I don't remember) near one of the graves of a Studebaker brother.
