  • Electrical: Overdrive solenoid voltage?

My 55 1/2 ton pickup has been mostly converted to 12V,I've just gotten the overdrive working by replacing the governor with a toggle switch and the relay with a modern Bosch style unit.
My question is:Will the solenoid handle 12V? Or should I add a voltage reducer?
    Thanks!

You should replace the 6 volt solenoid with a 12 volt solenoid. They are interchangeable.

They are interchangeable. Well.... they may be then again they may not be... some have 3 terminals, some have two.

On the three terminal ones, you wire the two activating terminals together. The later solenoids have a second magnet circuit to engage the overdrive. Once it is in overdrive, the extra circuit is supposed to shut off, and the "holding" circuit takes over. If you wire the two together. the two magnets act as one, the same way the original solenoid worked. This is per Randy Rundle at the 12volt seminar at the Omaha International.
