  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Broken speedometer cable

My 1928 Studebaker Dictator has a broken speedometer cable, or at least when I look at the end that goes into the speedometer itself. There is no cable end coming out of the casing. So, apparently I will need to replace the inside part of the cable. If anyone has done this, it would be helpful to know what you had to do, and perhaps where you got the parts to get the job done. Thanks for any information for this project.

    DEBurt,
If your car uses a standard size spedometer cable you can get a kit at your FLAPS. Fish the gear out of your transmission and take it with you to make sure the cable end fits. Basically you cut the cable to length (the pieces of the old one are helpful or the length might be in the parts book) and crimp an end on the cable. Get the special graphite lube as well. I did mine in 2008 and it is still just fine. This would be a good time to lube the speedometer as well. Most have an oil hole somewhere right above where the cable attaches (again, not sure about 1928!).

9/29/2008-10/2/2008 I know I have not been updating the site much but not much has been happening. The car has been running great and I have been driving it as much as possible which makes for not …

    Good luck!
    Nathan
