I have the S/C belts off for water pump replacement, and I am thinking about replacing the spring loaded idler arm tensioner with a turn buckle tensioner. I bought one some years back and have not tried it. Has anyone out there used one, and if so, how did it work? It looks like it would be easier to install the belts, but were there any disadvantages to using it?

It certainly made installing new belt sets easier for me. Remember, over-tension is as bad as under tensioning. A set of super-stubby wrenches helps, too.Jim

Only negatives would be overtightening the belts, as jlmccuan pointed out, and having to remember to check for excess SLACK in blower belts once in a while. If the car were ever sold, the new owner would need to be
informed about the change.
