  • Transmission / Overdrive: 5spd overdrive

What is the trans make and number for the overdrive 5spd truck trans?
    Who has one? $? Condition?
Do I have to change the clutch in a 61 Champ?
    4 spd to 5 spd?
    Thanx

(apparently there is no capital 5)
I think it's a New Process .(brand of trans)

Yes...New Process. Very few of them out there. Be prepared to spend $1000 or so for a good one. I believe you will also need the unique bell housing and clutch linkage.

Keep in mind the NP 5 speed has a pretty shallow OD. About 15%.

You might consider a Borg Warner T86 with OD. It would be a less expensive swap and give you a deeper OD (25-30%). You can make it a floor shifter like your 4 speed with a Jeep top shift conversion.

I just did a top-shift conversion on a T86E using a Jeep shifter. It came out very nice.

The NP540 has an 18% overdriven fifth gear. It's also noisy and slow shifting. JMHO, but I'd always choose the T89C 3-speed with overdrive for a Champ than either the too-heavy NP540 or the too-light T90B (the truck version of the T86).

            Thanx All.
It's nice to ask about an idea and get lots of input, with out doing a lot of work just to be wrong.
            More questions later.

The NP 5speed OD is a strange animal but will let a heavy truck do 65 MPH. Ours had a 5.13 so we dropped to 4.56 and got another few MPH. The NP 5 speed got us another few MPH and we can hit 65 but cruise at 60 MPH.

Our 'stock 4.56 with 4 speed went 52 MPH at 2800 rpm
