  • Chevy "elitist"

Took my wife to an oldies dance last night (because we're old)...heard the guy next to me say something about his 65 vette. So I told him that the '63 thru '67s were my favorite years. When I mentioned that I had a '64 Stude at home, he told me without hesitation that, " ...they were ugly".

It never ceases to amaze me how a lot of the tri-5s and vetters look down on anything other than the bow-tie. I had a good laugh at his expense later, but at the time he simply took me back a little. I bit my tongue. I was a good boy.

I realize that he doesn't represent the majority of those boys, but guys like him surely don't give 'em a good name!

Kinda makes you wish you had an R3 and give him and his 'vette a good ole a$$-kicking! Cheers, Junior.

His wasn't an opinion. It was a flat out insult.
Doug, what was the laugh at his expense?

Hey, some people are just narrow minded. I just feel bad for them. If they would only let themselves know about Studebakers or other makes, they'd be much more interesting to know. What can you do?

My chuckle was when I cast my eyes at the rest of the table after his remark, 3 or 4 people we looking at him in disbelief. Then later a comment was made to me about how much of a goofball he is. So, I guess the old adage applies, "you can remain quiet and have people think you are stupid, or open your mouth and prove it." Based on that, I remained silent and let him remain the dope. In my younger years I would have popped off and come out looking like the fool...time has mellowed me, I guess!

I "grew up" on Chevies, owned several '55 & '56 Nomads and a bunch of other tri-fives and '60s models. They don't compare to Studebaker as far as quality and durability. Anybody can keep an old Chevy on the road-or show car trailer-all it takes is money, you can practically build an entire tri-five from brand new parts. It takes a real person to keep a Studebaker on the road. Parts are not always easy to come by and the average mechanic doesn't have a clue how to work on Stude drive trains and suspensions. Most of he guys at the car parts places have never even heard of Studebaker, they think it might be German or something. I would just consider the source when someone makes comments like that.

There are rude people everywhere. I wouldn't demonize all vintage Chevy owners because of a few bad apples. I guarantee there are Studebaker owners who would say something similar to a Chevy owner if given the opportunity

When someone runs up against a rude Studebaker person, I would hope they would just walk away and not hold it against all Studebaker owners.

Opinions are like Corvettes...everybody's got one. Somebody must think a Plastic Impala outrates a Lark in A Party Dress.
I agree, 63-67 Corvettes are some nice-looking cars. And I will never have one, because at a certain point you just can't afford to be associated with those who do. Also, the 14K chains pull out my greying chest hairs IYKWIM. This is from a 1966 El Camino owner, so, dude, that's harsh.

My absolute favorite though was the 73-77 C3 with bottle-blond delete option. A 2-liter Alfa [sedan!] would take them handily, off the line and top end, still getting better mileage. My companions of the time learned to lip-read "Volkswagen!?" mouthed from the right seat. The suicide rate in those pre-Viagra days must have been tragic. Luckily for GM, the need for certain Corvettes is something you grow into, not something you're bred for.

Inwardly beauty--the Studes have it hands down...Corvettes are superficial, just like their owners!

I'm sure most of us have run into a few Studebaker Elitists within our club as well. It seems to me some Avanti Owners look down on the regular ranks of Studebaker owners as well.

I fully agree! That's the reason I only stayed a member of AOAI for 1 year. I still own and enjoy the Avanti, but so many Avanti Owners don't seem to have the true Studebaker Sprit outlook on life that I so enjoy with SDC.

Several years ago I was at a Cruise night here in Jersey with my 55 Coupe when a decent looking 56 Chevy Rolls in , A nice looking lady gets out of the Chevy with her man and walks over to My Stude asks what it is and a few other questions , As They walk away I heard her say ,John , Now theres a good looking car why can't we sell your box and get one of them ! Poor guy

I don't know if they look down on Studes, but rather are just Avanti-centric. From observation and reading the Avanti magazine, my guess is that manyof those owners are just into Avantis...their interest in old cars begins and ends with that car.
Some are just into the IIs, post-84s or post-2000 models usually depending on what they own. Some aren't "car guys/girls" but like the Avanti because of its style and Loewy connection.
For people with narrow interests, it's not hard to imagine that they're not into bulletnoses and Larks....despite the Avanti's obvious relation to the latter.
I think the majority of those people just belong to the AOAI and not the SDC. Yes, SDC welcomes their cars at its meets but it wouldn't hurt to have SDC members reach out to those folks.
Remember, "snobbery" can go both ways, just because a person shows up who doesn't know a carb from a hog trough, doesn't make him/her any less of a Stude Avanti/Avanti fan.

In the old car world, I think its poor form to call anyone's baby ugly..because no matter how cool you think your car is, I can guarentee that someone has something cooler, rarer, more valuable.
