  • paper or oil air filter is original

I have a 1955 Studebaker President State with a paper air filter. Were both paper and oil bath air filters avaliable on this car? I have been told so by some and no by others.

Yes, both were available. Oil bath air filters tended to be used on cars originally sold in areas where there was a high level of dust in the air whereas paper filters were on cars sold in "cleaner" air areas. Customer preference played in as well. In the '50's I think a lot of car buyers still did not like the idea of paper filters.

That is my understanding, paper air filter was avaliable for the 1955 Presidet. Several people have insisted the oil bath air filter was ALL that was original equipment on my car.

That may be because oil bath filters were standard in something like 40 of the 48 states then. Certainly a paper filter is authentic on your car and could have been original equipment if the car was sold in one of the states where an oil bath wasn't furnished.
