  • Engine: What did this engine come out of??

After using 12 quarts of oil for a 200 mile trip on International Drive Your Studebaker Day, I decided it was time to rebuild the engine in the Hawk.

The engine number is P104570. I believe the engine is a 289 non-Jet Thrust. What else can be told from the engine number? Such as year, model, etc.

Interestingly, it seems the engine has never been torn dowm. Everything is still standard and even the head gasket was steel. I hate to touch it, but we will have to bore the cylinders to .040 and turn the journals .010.

    Thanks for the information.

I used to carry 2-5qt. jugs of oil to go 300 miles. Turned out to be the end gaskets on the oil pan had crystallized. Uses a qt every 3000 miles now. I am even running 15-50 NAPA synthetic, with no problem. I didn't tear the engine down. It was as clean as a whistle inside.

      Yours looks to be a '63 289...

Mine turned out to be '57 259.

        Your answer is here:

It MAY be a '63 Lark/Hawk 289, is it a full flow Filter engine?
It would not be an R Series Engine unless it starts with R, RS, JT, or JTS.

Gentelmen; Hope its OK to ask this question. What would engine # L-894 be. This is from the build sheet for my '58 Packard Starlight Coupe. It doesn't fit as I see it on the list provided. Thank you Bob Fish

It says that '58 Packard 289 (Studebaker) Engines START at L-101, so that is what it is, the 893rd. one Assembled.

You have a '58 Packard Starlight HARDTOP, not a Coupe.
