  • Steering: GT Hawk Steering Boxes

Are there boxes that fit GT Hawks with steering ratios beyond the power and standard boxes and, if so, what are they?

I'm sure you could adapt a Saginaw integral box and end up with a much cleaner, tighter, faster steering system, I have been thinking about looking into this myself. I've done Saginaw conversions on old Ford Broncos with great results, a GT Hawk conversion shouldn't be too difficult. Not aware of a direct "bolt in" box, but you might check Bob Johnstone's site for some ideas. I have the shorter kingpin arms which helps quicken the steering somewhat, but also make the ps work a lot harder when parking.

The easiest way to improve on those trashy Ross boxes is to replace them with a Saginaw box from a late Lark.
Yes, its still a 40+ year old box, but all you've had to do is:
      1) extend (if you like that European straight arm style of driving you can leave the shaft short) the steering shaft to the Hawk length,
      2) and drilled one new hole thru the frame to bolt it in.
You'll find that 2 of the 3 Saginaw holes will match what's already on the Hawk frame.
Use those 2 to bolt it on, and use the third Saginaw hole as a template to drill the third hole in the frame.

I should have mentioned this is for the salt racing chassis. I want the steering as slow as possible.

Ok then, that said; what you want is the '63-'64 Wagonaire and Convertible Saginaw manual steering Box (without Power) with the slow, easy steering and modify as skyway said to fit a C/K body with a lower angle and longer shaft.
