  • Transmission / Overdrive: Air Cooled Automatics

Were all Studebaker automatics air-cooled or did some utilize a fluid cooler in the radiator ? Thanks, Dan

Most were air cooled, but some of the heavy duty units were water cooled.

All H.D. column shift Flight-O-Matics, Power Shift floor shifts, and Trucks have radiator water cooled Oil and Air Cooling. That includes '57-'58 Golden Hawks, '57 Packard Clippers and '58 Packard Hawks, also Avantis.

The H.D. Flight-O-Matics were used in H.D. Sedans/Wagons, Police, Taxi, and the later '63 & on Jet Thrust Powered Cars so equipped.

I always kind of questioned the idea of pumping hot transmission fluid into an already hot radiator, itself trying to cope with cooling an even hotter engine. Know what I mean?

Agreed, a separate trans cooler is a welcome addition.
