Is anyone in the South Bend/Oceola area planning to put together a drag race at the meet?

I've heard rumors, but nothing official. If they happen, they would be at the Oceola track. I hope they happen, I want to race Matt's wagon with my '40... :p

BUT ...Jim, it may have brought $60K (not just $49K) had it not been a Dragged ...that's loosing value in my book. Oh well, that unique Avanti's "mystic" is gone forever!;)

I had a blast at the drags at the 2007 South Bend meet. There was a line of Studebakers leaving the fairgrounds, and my granddad and I were in my '59 pickup, at the end of the line. Two Studes before us stopped at the gate, and by the time they had pulled out, the line was long gone. We followed the two cars for quite a while until they stopped at a gas station and asked why we were following them. We said "We're behind you because we don't know how to get to Osceola!" They came back with, "Oh, well.. We're headed to Utah!"

We managed to ask enough people and get directions, and we finally made it. It was pure fun. It was great to finally see Ted Harbit rocket down the 1/4, but it was almost just as fun watching Phil Harris in his Diesel car hauler race Gary Ash in his M5 pickup. They were timed with a sun dial. The car that I remember making the most passes was an unrestored '56 Packard hardtop with a 3 speed stick. Dick Steinkamp even made a few runs in S2D, his black Starliner.

Too bad all those guys devalued their cars. Pfft.. If that's the case, maybe George Krem will pay me to haul away his Challenger.

If something gets organized for Oceola I may bring the '41, as it now appears we won't be able to participate at the Orphan drags in May at Brown County,In. due to family visitors that week.

We are planning on bringing both our 56J and our 63 R2 Daytona to South Bend, it would be fun to run it a few times........ the 63 R2 that is.

You know the drill.. I'll wax the transmission on the '56 for a pass in the Lark against Ted.. I would be honored to lose a drag race against him.

I'd be willing to make the arrangements to run out at Osceola Dragway, but I doubt that I would be able to have time off of work early that day to be at the track to handle things then.

Drove my 64 Cruiser straight through to SB in 2002 and had a blast racing. The engine now rests in my daughters 63 Lark. Still a daily driver with 120,000 and 7 or 8 race seasons. Its slowed down a few tenths. Have to see how things work out for another trip Home.

Were not sure which car we will bring to South Bend but we will be participating in any drags we can, if they have them. It might be a good opportunity to get Caroline behind the wheel for a shot at all the fun besides that would take a good 50 lbs off the car weight.

Anything more about this yet? I am trying to schedule things and that would be easier if I knew when the drags are going to be (if they are going to be). I'd love to stretch the Cruiser's legs a bit.

Joe , if it happens you can pretty much count on it being friday afternoon , thats about the only day that would be open and thats when its always been in past years.

This is NOT official but I feel confident we can have drags at the International Meet at Osceola and will be on Friday. I got an email from Don Galeziewski who is a South Bend policeman and he was telling me he had lunch with the manager of the track who is also on the police force and thought they could open up an hour or two earlier on Friday which is their normal test and tune night. I think this is the same way it was done the last time we were there.

For those that want to attend the Awards Banquet, they can go early and see (or do) a couple hours of racing and still get back to the banquet.

If I drive the Broadmoor.. We'll see what a loaded President longroof with a 289 auto and a 3.07 can do on the 1/4 mile. Maybe the track has a sun dial to time it with.

Osceola is a great track. I ran it during the iM in 2007 with my Starliner. Not fast, but fun! :D...

It reminded me of being back in Puyallup, WA in the 1960's when they had a track. Probably like a lot of other small, regional tracks "back in the day".

It really is a great afternoon to take that Stude out and make a few passes. I highly recommend it.

Don't think of it as being slow , but rather " getting more fun time on the track " , than those fast guys .

Dick, I remember that well...! The '07 drags were a big highlight of the Meet for me. I badly wanted to run Gary Ash in his M5 with my '59 pickup, but they wouldn't let me anywhere near the track without seat belts. I can understand the danger.. I had a 60 mile an hour truck! <grin>

Sounds great. For those not familiar with that track, and in my case drag racing in general, what kind of safety requirements are there? I would assume seat belts, what about helmets?

Pat Dilling
02-14-2012, 03:48 PM
I see that Osceola is an NHRA track. They will probably do a quick inspection of the car. It will need seat belts and some sort of radiator overflow catch receptacle. They will look for significant fluid leaks. They should look at tires for minimum tread, except slicks of course. They may also check to make sure all lug nut are in place. Some tracks will have you remove hub caps. You will need to wear long pants and shoes, no shorts or sandals. You will need a helmet if your car runs faster than 14:00 seconds. For most street driven cars that we might bring that should be most of it.

Speaking of helmets, if someone local has one I can use that would save me some storage space on my long trip across country. I promise to wash my hair and even wear a "doo rag" if you want.

Thanks

Obviously, there has been a failure to "communicate"....in using the 2010 National, in Glendale, AZ, as a "model", the rumor, of said activity and where it was going to be held, was posted on the forum within a day of the annual October Grand Canyon SDC member ship dinner in 2008 and continued right up until the meet. There hasn't been activity with this following thread, under the 2012 forum, since the last posting in May.

Not even a "peep" from the organizing committee(s)...... ;)

I cant answer for Oseola but we are planning to bring a 1/4 mile drag stip slot car track and race at the Comfort Suiets south in the evening. Its HO scale and will probably be run by the Maxey familys generator. My son ran my 64 R2 Commander in 07 and would enjoy watching the drags this year ! Ed

As found on the 2012 Forum this morning, with the following info posted by Chicken Hawk!

"On Friday, the Osceola strip will open an hour or two early for their regular test and tune night. This will give people time to go to the track to either watch or race for a couple hours before heading back if they want to attend the banquet. I don't know the exact hour they will open but we can find out at the meet. My guess is it will be around 3:00."

OK, Everyone:

It's Official as of Today :D when the following was entered on the Osceola Dragway website:

The above link is posted here as an informational courtesy to those attending The SDC International Meet. It will not be posted in The 2012 SDC International Meet Section of this Forum because:

THIS IS NOT A FUNCTION OR EVENT SPONSORED OR IN ANY WAY ENDORSED BY or ASSOCIATED WITH, THE STUDEBAKER DRIVERS CLUB and/or MICHIANA CHAPTER OF SAME and/or THE SDC INTERNATIONAL MEET COMMITTEE.

(Confidentially, I know The Stude Tomato will be there with Ted Harbit at the wheel, because I'm picking it up for him at his house Monday morning, July 30, to take it to South Bend on my trailer, for the week. This so he and Mary Ann can ride up in the air-conditioned comfort of their late-model car.:!:)

Thanks Bob. Should help answer a LOT of questions. For those that might want some directions this might help. First there will probably be a groupl leaving the fairgrounds around 1:30/1:45 but it's pretty easy to get separated on the way.

Ironwood Road is the road just on the east side of the fairgrounds. Turn left coming out of the fairgrounds and go about half a mile or less to US20. Turn right on 20 and go about four mile to 331 (and Elm Road I think), turn left and go about three mile to Lincolnway (933) and turn right.

Go about four mile to Ash Road (219) and turn left and just under a mile the drag strip will be on the right. Just before you come to a cement type bridge there will be a place to turn right to get into the strip. Hope this helps for those not familiar with the area.

Ted

Per Ted's Directions, in case you copied them for your Met Packet to take along:

1. The Drag Strip is located on Ash Road, Indiana 219, and West County Line Road. All three of those thoroughfares are one and the same thing, so don't be confused.

2. When you get off four-lane, limited-access U.S.20 going east, you do get off to go north on Elm Road, or Indiana 331. They, too, are one and the same. However, the name changes from Elm Road to Capital Avenue when you get close to Lincolnway.

3. As Ted said, Lincolnway and Indiana Road 933 are also one and the same road.

May I suggest some of us participants print a few copies of the directions to the track and put a few on some of the vendors tables for folks to take. I will take the initiative and print a few to put on our vendors table. I personally have it in my GPS this time so I know I won't get lost again. GGG

edit: I have now run off 25 copies of directions to the track that Ted provided here to have available at our space.

Close ratio (2.20 low) aluminum case T10 (not a Super T10). Probably from a 62 Corvette. Hurst Competition Plus shifter.
