  • Electrical: Wiring a 51

    I am wiring a 51 Starlight Coupe.
    Going 12 volts.
Using a modified 58 studebaker harness.

What kind and number of light bulb I need to use for the front turn signal /parking lights?
    One or two filament?

Do I need to replace the light bulb socket?

Also what number of bulb to use in the tail lights?

    Thanks
    Paul

Others can jump in here but no socket change required. If the existing bulb is 1154 which I suspect it is then just go to 1157

I don't know about the 51's but earlier 6 volt Studes used a 2 filament bulb that had the the locating nubs straight across from each other. The 1157 bulb and 1134 have the nubs offset so they won't interchange. There was talk here a while back that there is a 12 bulb that will work that has straight across nubs but I don't have the number. A socket change can also be done.

I did a search here and came up with this: For the 6v 1154 offset nub the replacement 12 volt bulb is 1034- 1157 or P21/5W For the 6v 1158 straight across nubs the12 volt replacement bulb number is 1176 or 1376. Hope this helps. If you can locate those bulbs it saves the hassle of replacing the socket assemblies.

The reason I asked the question was that when I tried the turn signal they would not work.
I had brand new buckets with 6 volt bulbs in them.

I tried to take the bulb out , I was surprised that it had a real small bulb in it
                  with single filament.
The bulb would not come, broke the glass.

Then I posted my question to find out what light bulb I should use.

The two filament bulb suggested here worked fine.

The brand new bucket having a single filament bulb in it, caused my request for information.
