  • Auto-start option of the 1930's

Back in the 1930's, Studebaker had an innovative auto-start option. Don't know the exact name of it, but may have been "Startrix" or something like it. Suspect it functioned based on loss of engine vacuum so that when ignition was on and clutch depressed, it reengaged the starter. Anyone have any information on this option? Thanks, CarCrosswordDan

Correct, CCD, except for one thing. There was no clutch pedal interlock. You only had to turn the key on to have the starter engage. It would kick in regardless of whether the pedal was depressed or not. If the engine stalled there was about a 1.5 second delay before things happened.

I know Pierce Arrow and Franklin also used the Startix.

Terry, thanks for the response. Did find out it was called "Startix" as you indicated. It appears it may have been a 1932 only option. is that correct?

It was on several years of Studebaker's in the 1930s.

It is on my '33. A product of Bendix. Stude was not the only manufacturer to use it: Auburn, Cord, DeVaux, Durant, Essex, Franklin, Hupmobile, Lincoln, Nash, Packard, Pierce-Arrow, Reo, Rockne, Studebaker and Willys-Knight

GEEZ Brad! Looks like Lincoln was the only one that the Startix didn' Deep Six!
No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I have now owned two Cords, both of which were equipped with the Startix. Both had a clutch pedal interlock that would only restart the car after a stall if the clutch pedal was depressed. Tom
