You think we can get a relay from the west to the east? That is what I want for an Avanti project, but the kids want Christmas stuff. Did I ever tell how much I hate Santa Claus??Jamie McLeod

Maybe you should go to the mall and tell him you want this Avanti and then buy a big stocking.

Avanti's are extremely expensive to restore but why would they be more expensive to build as a driver than any other 60's vintage car. My plan was to bring my 74 in under $7500 including the original $3500 purchase price using Ebay and Craigslist. So far there is a complete SBC 383 sitting on the stand for under $1000. The rear end rebuild including bearings, posi and gears is under $300. The Turner brake upgrade including new M/C and rear brakes with all new lines is under $700, not all are Jim's parts. "New" Hog troughs and frame repair metal under $500.
That leaves about $1500 for "new" front seats and body work and paint. There is absolutely no labor cost involved so unless I decide to add EFI to the engine I'll be close. $10,000 will certainly cover the cost with even more upgrades.

I agree that there must be a story to this car. I am thinking that much of it may have been used as a parts car for another restoration. There is also an air of sadness about it. You know that at one time it was a very elegant and cherished possession for someone...how did it wind up in such bad shape? Kinda like finding a wandering homeless person who has a past of a great education, home, and successful resume. Somewhere along the line, things went terribly wrong.John Clary

We looked over the car at the museum a few weeks ago. Hog troughs and frame looked good. The car was donated to the museum so the history is sketchy. Looks like there is no reserve so it could be a good project for someone. (with alot of money)
Hope it goes to a good home. The money goes to a good cause. We need to keep the California Auto Museum open.Jon Stalnaker

A friend in Naples just told me about a gold avanti for sale at Baker Towing on Shirley Street who has it because of unpaid charges. I think it could be the one I looked at in Bonita Springs back in 2004. If it is the same car it had come to FL from CA. I will look to see if I can find the ID#, but I doubt if I do any longer. At that time the owner was in the AOAI directory. The seller said he would start it, but when I looked at the interior, etc. I knew it needed more than my skills could provide. I told him he didn't need to try to start it. The sun had taken a toll on the car inside and out. I think it was a 1963, but not sure now.
If some on has interest or curiousity the phone number for the company could be developed. I have no idea of what efforts have been made to sell the Avanti."Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional." author unknown

I can see that car with a nice LS3 and a T56 six speed, updated suspension and brakes, some Recarro style seats and a decent paint job. Would be a great car to drive and maybe take out to track days either at a drag strip or road course. I could see about $20k invested with patient shopping and doing work yourself. Would just have to resist going crazy on the parts you buy.
