Studebaker never used a modern VIN. The plate you see on the driver's side door pillar is the serial number. There is actually little to no information contained in it. There is also a plate under the hood on the passenger side of the firewall. This is the body tag. It will tell you the trim level of the car.

The VIN on Studebakers is just a serial number. It doesn't tell you anything except the number of the car you have.
Champions built in South Bend started with G-400,501, if built in Los Angeles it would start with G-839,701 and Canada would start with G-703,101.
There is a body tag under the hood on the firewall that tells some information. It should read: 8G - C3 or C5, then a body number under that.
8G means it is a 49 Champion, C means it is a 5 passenger coupe, 3 means it is a DeLuxe trim and 5 means it is Regal DeLuxe trim.
I am assuming that you are talking about a 5 passenger coupe, not a 3 passenger coupe.
Hope this info is correct. Mr. Biggs is the expert on these numbers.

That is true in this case, but not on the later model Transtar trucks as the serial tag contained information on the front and rear axle ratings, the braking system as well as the rear axle ratio.

You have a South Bend built 1949 Champion. Your statement of "...3 seperate (sic) pieces of glass in rear..." throws me. Neither the three passenger coupe (business) nor the five passenger coupe (Starlight) have three separate pieces of glass in the rear. Post the information on the body plate and we will tell you more.
You can also buy a build sheet for your particular car by providing the S/N to the Studebaker National Museum.
