  • Transmission / Overdrive: Transmission Grinding into 2nd gear

After it has been sitting in my barn for 30+ years, I have decided to resurrect my 1960 Hawk (3 spd with OD). I recall that when I last drove it, the gears would grind when shifting into 2nd gear unless I double-clutched it. Any suggestions as to what I should check to correct this problem ? Thanks in advance.

Synchronizers in the transmission are worn. It will have to come out to have them replaced.

That's a common problem with the Borg Warner T86 transmission. The blocker ring wears on second gear causing the grinding. I agree with 41 Frank, in order to correct the problem, the trans will have to be repaired. Bud

Another caution is to not use 85/90 gear oil. The additives in it attack the synchronizers. Use straight 90 weight mineral oil if you can find it, or straight 40 wt engine oil.
