Comparing the pictures you can tell the item in question is on the antenna. No clue what it is.

Firestones (sorry I didnt see you ask that part),they are a bit old but have few miles and were never stored outside or loaded. No dry rot or leaks either.

as for the "item" its a fulton aerial booster. Here it is with its first paintjob

Very rare 50s era accessory, I've only seen 2 of em and I owned both of them. Its supposed to help your radio reception but it dont work. It should also have tassels flowing out the back but I havent got those installed yet.

Technicaly wrong for the car but I like it. It will eventually have white scallops outlined in the same peacock blue as whats on the sides.

2 cans of that in blue and 2 cans of Krylon lacquer clear. The insides and back of the wheels I painted with krylon true blue so it would be a lot cheaper. The Metalspecks is 10 bucks a can and it would have taken another 3-4 cans to do the rest of the wheels with it.

I've done a lot of painting using this combo and while it wont last as long as "real" paint with a little care it will last a lot longer than you think. 3-4 years with a good waxing every so often. When it starts to lose its shine, a quick scuff with 1000 grit and reshoot the clear.

Studerodder looking foward to meeting up with you! I'm fairly certain I shouldnt have any issues getting into the Pileup.

and as for the price of the tires,, I'm afraid they were uh,,, well FREE!, a buddy had them on his car and with his loose steering box it was quite a handful to drive so he got a set of www radials to replace them. He was going to pitch these but when he offered them up to me I jumped all over it.

I do embrace my inner CASO and am not afraid to admit it.

thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting Roth's RattleBomb Flake to shoot the wheels. I was thinking about Gang Green Flake, Gang Green Kandy, with Surfite Silver Base.
( http://www.rothmetalflake.com/flakes.html ) but it is $20 a can and would require a base, kandy, and clear.

When I got that aerial booster we were thinking it was a bicycle part or off an amuesment park ride, but there was a logo and description on the top side that said what it is, I'd show you but it is unfortunatly buried under a bunch of paint.

Infidel the green metal specks is pretty awesome too, lots cheaper and from what I understand alot easier to spray than the Roth stuff. Those colors have to be cleared though or it doesnt shine very good.

I think that I will most likely go with the green metal specks to start. Maybe in 3-4 years move up to the Roth stuff. Do you think it would be worth doing a silver base to give it that extra pop or would it even make a difference?

Edit: just checked some online reviews saying that a silver base would indeed give it a little extra pop.

So in turn brings my next question: Would it be wise to lay down the silver then give it a scuff, then spray on a couple coats of green, then clear it? Im not shooting for a pro job, just want it to look decent when I roll it out of the garage! I am now thinking about going with the burnt orange. Might be a good contrast to the green of the wagon.

Da Tinman
09-23-2011, 06:22 PM
The base coat will definatly effect the final color, brighter bases will make it stand up more. Its almost a candy type paint the more you add the better the color, I put at least 6 coats on my wheels before I cleared em.

I love the orange too, heres a pic of a rose I made and painted with it, but I should warn you its a lot brighter than it appears on the can!

perfect! thanks for the info Jay (guessing your name by your website address). I am going to go with the Burnt Orange and Silver Base after seeing your pic. I think it will really standout with the dark green color of the wagon... might try to start this project tomorrow.

Plan is to lay down an automotive based primer, then the silver, then the orange. Might only get the primer done tomorrow, but it is a start! It's really a pain in the ass having the car in a different location than where I am staying.

James

Da Tinman
03-16-2012, 11:20 PM
no I didnt sand between coats, I put down a coat and let it tack off and sprayed the next coat while it was still a bit tacky, over and over and over Haha. Same with the clear, once the last coat had tacked off I started spraying clear.

Probably not the exact correct way of doing it but its never failed me, yet.

Not sure whats happening for shows this summer, I'd love to go but I'm swamped at work and thankfully its not looking like its gonna get any easier for a while. Add to the amount of customer work I bought my wife a droptop Lark, well Skylark and its turned into a bright red shiny hole in the pavement that I have been pouring time and money into. I know the May show is out but July should be workable.

Thank god for smart phones. By the time that I got to Fred Meyer, I had forgotten if I was supposed to get Lacquer or Acrylic. So I turned to the browser on my Droid and logged on to both here and the HAMB to get my answers. Picked up the last two cans of Rustoleum Lacquer on the shelf. I think they were $4.79 each.
