  • SHIFTER LINKAGE

I HAVE A 54 CHAMP AND CAN NOT CHANGE GEARS WITHOUT PLAYING WITH NEUTRAL. I HAVE TRYED LINING THE LEAVERS UP WITH EACH OTHER WITH SOME ONE IN CAR HOLDING SHIFTING LEAVER IN NEUTRAL. PUTTING BOTH SHIFTING FORKS ON TRANS IN NEUTRAL AND ADJUSTING LINKAGE. BUSHINGS IN LINKAGE LOOK GOOD WITH NO PLAY. WHAT AM I MISSING OTHER THEN A BRAIN?

There was actually two or three bulletins issued over the years on adjusting that linkage. One last step; shorten the low-reverse rod a couple turns and test drive, readjust in or out as felt necessary.

Dwain, Thanks for that information. My '53 coupe has been sticking in first on occasion for the last 6 years. I've tried everything (I thought) I ran the 1st/reverse rod back 3 turns and now it seems like it is smoother, I don't have to Z the shift between 1st and second. Time will tell.
