  • Scored a '51 Commander, need parts

I just picked up a '51 Commander Coupe off Craigslist. I've only wanted one since I was rounding 15, and I finally got one as I'm rounding '51.... All that concentrated Atomic Space-Age Googie Style in one place! My very own "Space Patrol Staff Car"!

Anyway, the previous owner removed the original engine and transmission to swap in a Chebbie. Yes, it's one of those. But at least he kept all the original parts. Except for the ones he lost. Anyway, I'm going to sell the Chebbie stuff and reinstall the original 232 to see how it runs. But first, I'm looking for a transmission mount or two, the engine mount brackets that bolt to the engine, the engine mount brackets the bolt to the frame (actually the car still has these, but in a Sawz-Alled condition), and a carburetor hopefully with oil bath. Any good package deals?

    I'm in Omaha.

    Thanks!

      Where are you located?

      Oops.

I see that you are in Omaha.

      Nebraska I would guess.

Location means everything when you need big parts.

I have some things, but shipping, even with flat rate shipping is going to be more than most people want to pay.

Doug: You might contact Ted Harbit and see if he'd sell you a token bit or piece off the damaged Chicken Hawk, since it was a brother to your '51 Commander Starlight. That would be cool, to be able to point to a specific component, no matter how small, and say it was originally one part of such a famous Studebaker. BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

I was wondering, would Lark engine and tranny mounts swap over for this?

BTW, would a bat-wing cross member from a '51 Champion fit in this?

Including the original engine that I'm going to reinstall and the Chevy stuff that I'm going to sell or trade.

Congratulations on your find! And that I think its just terrific to hear that you intend to return to genuine Studebaker power.

I probably have sold all the Chevy parts today. That should free up some money for Stude parts and patch panels.

I just deposited the check for those Chevy parts that I sold off from this project and now I'm more willing to buy some Stude parts. Here's an update on what I need for the '51.

                      More urgent:
                      Rear transmission mounts
                      Carburetor

                      Less urgent:
                      Taillight lens
                      Air filter
Turn signal add-on to steering column
                      Plastic insert for steering wheel

                      Maybe need:
                      Batwing crossmember

                      Otherwise:
What's up with those "rubber baby buggy bumpers" that hold up the pillow block?

Is Howard's Parts or anybody else active with Stude parts in the Omaha area?

Yes Doug Howards Parts is alive and well in Omaha but we really can't be of much help with the stuff you need. John Caskey and myself still own the vendor business.
