  • OEM Battery

    Hello all,
I have a 65 Studebaker Commander and would like to replace the battery in the car with one that looks original. What battery would have come in my car new from the factory and does anyone know where I may buy such a battery? Thanks for your time.

Did Studebaker still use Willard batteries in 1965? If so, there was a vendor at Carlisle who had OEM type Willard batteries. Maybe someone would know the name. One of our club members had a OEM type Willard battery in his 63 Hawk. I can find out where he got it.

Actually I have found a web site: http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/

It would have been a Studebaker battery (Presolite) Buy a repo battery and a Studebaker battery sticker.

You will want the Studebaker battery label sold by the vendors. Willard is not correct for 65. I used to be the vendor for the repros before I sold out and retired. I can see if there are any left in their inventory. I may even have a stash here in Phoenix. They are rubber case with red and white caps.

From 1963 on to 1966 the factory used only "Studebaker" batteries in their cars and trucks.

The caps are individual push on red and clear plastic. The cases were as Green53 said, black rubber. The top of the Batt. had the Studebaker decal that all of us Studebaker Parts Vendors sell.

The tar top, screw-on cap Willard's are correct up to 1962.

The Willard is incorrect for a 64, but just tell folks the dealer had some old batteries laying around.

I checked and my supply has dried up. You might try to find a Group 24 sealed flat top battery such a an AC Delco. Remove the labels with a heat gun. Save the labels in case of needing warranty later. Obtain 6 of the proper caps and carefully glue them to the new battery. Put the proper decal on the battery. It will look quite authentic.
