View Full Version : One Good Stude Deserves Another

I'm still pinching myself...... I self diagnosed my condition as a Studebaker addict long ago but I didn't think I'd suffer another attack only three years after finding our '63 Hawk. This time my condition flared up suddenly on Monday when we went to look at a 1964 Daytona convertible that was advertised just an hour's drive from home. To make the long story short, I drove home this afternoon with the wind in my hair, at the wheel of a topless Stude.
Will be having it safetied by our mechanic next week but all seems well. Cruised home at 55 without a hitch - stops and steers well. The top is 99% and the radial tires are A1. Bumpers are good front and very good rear. Grille is straight and bright. Side trim has a couple of slight dimples. No visible body fill and only one dent (from underneath) in the hood. The engine is a 259, power steering and automatic. Radio and all gauges function - even the clock works (should that worry me?). A single one inch tear in the rear seat upholstery. Trunk full of spare parts, car cover, shop manual and parts books, extra wheel cover.
The seller had owned the car since '95 and told me that it had come to Ontario via Quebec from New York State over the years. A pre '95 owner had painted the car in what I am told is AMC matador red - it'll do for a driver. The original colour had been desert sand.
So, I'm thinking I've got a decent driver that we can have fun with right away and the car has potential for future upgrades as we drive it. I've assured my wife that a Daytona convertible won't depreciate!;) Roll on summer......[8D]http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/504909956_2b082e691a_o.jpg

Leonard,
None of these pics is of my car. IIRC there were three white and two red '64s at the meet. My car has a PA tag, narrower whitewalls, and no grill badge. It does have a red interior and red boot.
289, 4 speed, bench seat.
I'll work on posting a pic, but will have to set up a photobucket first. Also I have dialup :(

I thought that I had some pictures of it too, but can only locate about 10 images from the meet (and no rag tops). You may want to check with Frank Drumheller to see if he has any.

Hub, what is the serial number and body tag on yours?

Mine is an early 64, body #158. I was told the body numbers started with 101 so mine was the 57th convertible built for 64.

Hi Leonard - more great pics. Was the chrome gravel guard at the front of the rear wheel well a Daytona option or is it a Cruiser piece that people add on?
Our car is in the warehouse at our business today so I'll get that body tag number when I go out. May not be today as we are having very cool damp weather for the Victoria Day holiday weekend.

It doesn't show it in the brochure (of course, the brochures have known to be wrong!) It was probably an option or dealer add on. My car doesn't have one.

It is perfect weather here in Virginia, today. 72 degrees, sunny and a slight breeze! [8D] I hope our holiday weekend, Memorial Day, will be nice, also, as I am going to the Colonial Virginia Meet in Yorktown, VA

Perfect convertible weather! I took my car over to an old 1920s gas station that has been restored.

I think that someone said that the old fellow had lost everything at the casino's in Atlantic City and they could only come up with enough money for bus fare to York. I found him wandering around the flower show and thought he might look better around some cars. :D

Glen, that is a real nice looking car!

The number 64V means it is a 1964 V8 car made in South Bend. The serial numbers started with 64V - 1001 so yours is a late production.

J8 - means it is a Daytona 2dr. hardtop and it is the 1,461 hardtop body made.

I tried to come to your house and look at your car. I went to Mapquest. I thought this looked like your place, but there was a Corvette in the garage, so I figured it wasn't. I don't see any cactus at your place either.:D;)

Actually, this is just a joke. The house is in Richmond, VA and belongs to a homesick New Mexican. :D

The numbers that I have are; 484 domestic, 206 Canada and 13 export for a total of 703, but I think that Art U has corrected me on this in the past (maybe the Canada number). Maybe someone could look up what Fred F. put in the TW feature article.
