If no one here has one for sale, try Summit Racing or Jegs...even Edelbrock themselves. Sometimes they'll have factory refurbished carburetors for sale for substantially less.

You might also keep an eye on Ebay or Craigslist, though buying from those sources can be a real crapshoot. I'd rather buy a part like that from a source I know.

I just bought a 1404 [manual choke] from Bob Hook Chevrolet. Brand new on Ebay, for 265.99 plus 11.95 shipping.
his ebay name is bobhookperformance, but apparently he has nothing else for sale right now. He had more carbs a few weeks ago, though.

Ted Harbit had several for sale some time back, but I don't recall the numbers.

Last I spoke with Ted, he had no 500 CFMs. The #1403 500 CFM is not a common part number. The deals are on the 600 CFM.

Retail on a 1403 is $325 - $350 by the time you get it to the door. Don't forget a new fuel filter, new air cleaner element and an adapter if installing it on a pre-63 intake manifold.

Roy,

Are you looking for an original/correct R1 Carter AFB for a restoration? If so, I have one I had completely rebuilt for $450. (Yes, I know, I couldn't believe how much it cost either!)

If you don't buy an original R1 carb I would suggest the 1405 or 1406. They are closer to what the original Carter was in size 600cfm and they work real well on an R1. The 1405 is a performance carb and the 1406 is an economy carb, but both are 600cfm. I run the 1405 on my R1 we use in Pure Stock racing at the PSMCDR. Mine is actually half original Carter and half Edelbrock. It uses the original choke from the Carter that will attach right up to the Edelbrock 1405 and work just like it did originally on the R1 with the Carter.

I just purchase a R1 motor. It is going into a 64 GT Hawk. The original owner had a 1406 on it and wants it for his other project. Im thinking that a 1406 would be better for me. I not going original carb.

thank you for the simple and direct explanation of the 1405 vs 1406, Richard. I think I might be able to use it.

Thanks Richard. I went ahead purchased a 1406 from Summit autoracing.com. It cost 239.00 plus shipping cost. Also, I had to order a switch that is used with 1406 for AC. Now any suggestions on Air Cleaner.

I also use a 1" four hole spacer under the carb when not running Pure Stock. I use a K&N E-1570. It's Diameter is 13.250 in., height 2.875 in. This gives you a little space between it and the side of the air cleaner housing. The stock air cleaner base will not fit your new carb. SI sells a base that will work if I remember correctly or you can go after market.
George, are you going to race the Daytona this year at Bean Blossom?

Hi Richard. If the weather breaks up here so I can go out to my (unheated) barn and wrench on the car, and if I can get all of my current issues sorted out, it is my intent to drive the Lark down to Bean Blossom in May and maybe even take a couple passes (I've never raced before).

We sure hope you can make it. I plan to have my new car ready and I know of a few new cars showing up this year for the first time, maybe you will be among them. Peter Sant who I’m sure you know plans to come down for the race.
