  • Project Avanti will be restored

The new owner drove the project Avanti on his trailer for the trip to his home in Pa. He's retiring in a few months and seems well capable of bringing the car back and he too is joining the club and may show up here. Glad that I did not shoot this car in the head, it seems to like the new owner, drove right on the trailer like it was parked yesterday.

I just stabilized it in intensive care, the new owner has to "save it". He's in for some blood, sweat and tears, but he seems excited to get started.

            Pretty decent trailer setup.
Put the winch in the nose box and yank the dead one's up.
            Big tires...
            Tough duty rig...

I liked that car for the fact that it was really all there. Other than being left sitting for many years it appeared to be a great restoration prospect.

When I saw the original pre JDP eBay ad I figured that the frame was completely rotten and maybe the car was just a little too far gone. It was too far away for me to take a gamble on cross country shipping (you know they charge extra for shipping non running cars). I was tempted when JDP posted his surprise findings that it was actually a car with potential, that it actually had a good heart and ran. I was even tempted to bid on JDP's eBay auction. However, like many others, I already have a number of car projects and it makes little sense for me to add more project cars to my collection.

I've never met JDP or Sal, but I'm thrilled at the work they've done to help the Studebaker hobby by bringing once forlorn cars to new owners who will fix them and drive them.

I wonder how many of the '63/'64 Avantis are accounted for vs. the ghosts like this car that are waiting to be "found" again and added to the registries.

I don't know how many are "out there", but between my two dealers and me, we've found and bought 26 near dead Avanti's in the 9 years I've been doing this on ebay and maybe as many that were nice. Of those, at least 18 are back on the road, the rest were parted. Here's my yard a few years back and the next Avanti to go on ebay. (been sitting since 1991)

By going through the Avanti Owners Association roster, 20% of the cars are owned by AOAI members.
Add SDC members only (quite a few judging by my cross checking both rosters...yes, I need to get a life), non-members and cars just waiting to be found and/or restored, I figure about 50% of the 4647 Studebaer Avantis are still out there.
