    Studebaker Engine Names -edited

1955 to 1966 in order used.

    Victory Six 1955 Champion 185
    Pacesetter 1955-early Commander 224
    Route Star 1955 Truck; '56 Transtar 224
    Bearcat 1955-late Commander 259
    Passmaster 1955 President 259
    Sweepstakes 185 1956-57 Champion 185
Sweepstakes 259 1956 Commander, Power Hawk, Parkview; '57 Commander 259
Sweepstakes 289 1956 President, Pinehurst, Sky Hawk; '57 President, Silver Hawk 289
Sky Power Packard 1956 Golden Hawk 352
    Packard Super 289 1957 Clipper Supercharged 289
Load Star 1956-'59 Transtar, 1960 Champ 245 Six
    Work Star 1957-'64 Transtar 259
    Torque Star 1957-'64 Transtar 289
    Skybolt Six 1961-'64 OHV 170
    Power Thrust 1963-64 259
    Thunderbolt 1963-64 289
    R1 Jet Thrust 1963-64 289
    R2 Jet Thrust Supercharged 1963-64 289
    R3 Jet Thrust Supercharged 1963-64 304
    R4 Jet Thrust 1963-64 304
    Skybolt Six 1965-'66 194
    Super Skybolt 1966 230
    Thunderbolt 1965-66 283

Here is my revised list, but it still needs a bit of fine tuning because I did it from memory, and did not have all years of Showroon Brochures available at the time.

Then we also have to decide if we want to go with the Brochure info or the Engine I.D. Decals, also noting that none were used in 1958 to 1964.

Edit: If you have Studebaker Corp. documented data that differs from mine, please feel free to use the "Reply with Quote" and delete the "Quotes" & "Unquotes" and modify away on your own post! I am sure I did not get it PERFECT, not sure about the years of Truck engines and the 245 Big 6.

My '57 Packard valve covers have "Super 289" on them, but I don't think Studebaker used it as the name of the engine.

              Any updates to this list?

Also noting that no decals have were on engines from 59 through 64. Some names were in brochures in 63 but what about the 59 to 62 engines, any names used in literature or promotional videos?

Wasn't the 'Thunderbolt' name also used for the later Packard straight eights?

Work Star was used on the Champion 185 truck engine, 1956 - 1960. Work Star was also used on the 246 truck engine from its re-introduction midway through the 1956 2E series until 1960.

Route Star was used (only?) on the 1956 224 V8 engines installed in the 2E7 and 2E12 models.

Power Star was used on both 259 and 289 truck V8s from 1956 until at least 1959. The names don't appear after 1959 in the truck data books, but may be in sales literature.

Torque Star was used on the HD truck 289 V8 installed as an option in the 3E/4E38 and standard equipment in the 3E/4E40, and maybe thereafter.

NO Decals on '58 to '64 Engines, NOT '59-'64.

I have not found any "names" for any of the diesels in ads I have seen. There was the GM4-53 and 3-53. There might have been others. Also, there was the Perkins P6.

I saw an for sale ad once where 6-71 had been installed in an E-40. As I recall, the had to lift the cab and front sheet metal 4" to accommodate the added height of the engine.
