The shape at the bottom to fit the different side grills, they will not interchange.

Hoods are shaped differently too because of the difference in the side grills.

How can a person see the difference if finding one for sale?

If you are talking about the hood the difference is small but enough that they don't interchange. Hard to tell them apart without having a 62 and 63 hood side by side.

The grill shell on a 62 has a slope to the top rail. A 63 tends to stick straight out.

Can you tell the difference by laying the back side of the grill on a flat suffice?

'62 GT vs '63/'64 GT Grille

A '63 or '64 has a notch cut out of it at the lower outboard corner. The '62 does NOT.

The 63 has a larger inner margin, resulting in the grill positioned with a noticeably deeper inset to the grill surround. The 62 has a more shallow inner margin. Dan
