That's a Snap On tool box. It's where you keep the tools that you use to work on the Avantis. (Studebaker related).

Matt, that is sitting on a Snap-On shoe box, lol. Guess I should have put something else with it for a sense of scale.

N8N, good idea, I need to make one of those too, not that I have something similar but smaller in the pics.

My guess would be that it's a guide for centering the timing cover, with its felt seal, on the hub for the harmonic balancer.

Man, you guys have some goos ideas for more stuff to make. Gordr, you have the size pretty close and it does guide something, but not rings or seals...

That looks like something a friend made for to me to test/use on a car for the Newport Hillclimb, Sunday, October 3.
Maybe the first one ever made.

As an old industrial salesman who has sold everything from photo optic controls, air logic, cutting tools, etc. etc. My guess would be some type of "press fit" bushing.

I was going to say it was a fart pipe for an early Stude

Several good guesses so far and a couple of hints. It does indeed go somewhere between N8N's seal guide for the crank snout and DeepnHock's fart can. It is a billet aluminum piece for a hillclimb racer to address an alignment problem as the returning famous Lark Parker notes.

Another hint. It is installed to be used while the car is running.

So, Lark Parker is going racing in October?

He bounces back fast. I guess hanging out with Ted Harbit for all those years turned out to be a good thing. <G>

I will not bore you with recovery details but am not going to make it to the hillclimb, however, one of my cars will.
