  • Don't carry batteries in your pocket

[)]Since most of us use digital cameras these days, some of you might find this passingly interesting. Yesterday, I was in a hurry to get somewhere and in the process of checking my camera, I found that the batteries were on low charge status....so, I hurriedly took a set of batteries out of my charger and changed out the 4 AA batteries on the way out the front door. I casually stuck the old batteries in my front pocket..(normally would have immediately put them in the charger)....and didn't think another thing about it for the rest of the day. Last evening while watching the news on tv, I thought I felt heat in my pocket....a few minutes later I was CERTAIN I felt heat.....it felt like my pants were on fire! I jumped up and started emptying my pockets on the floor....grabbing the batteries and uttering a few expletives. I had the 4 AA batteries, some loose change and my pocket knife in that pocket....3 of the batteries were cool, but one of them was so hot you couldn't touch it. All the change and my pocket knife were also extremely hot. When the battery finally cooled off, I could see that it was bulging at the top. Now I have a brand mark on my right leg to remind me not to carry batteries in my pockets. Go figure![)]

Sounds like something my wife sould say... "Is that a Double A battery in your pocket?" Funny, I've always imagined it to be a couple of D cells...

        Steve,

Glad to hear you are okay. Sounds like you got a charge out of it!

[)]I'm thinking the change is what shorted out the battery.[)]
