has anyone got any suggestions as to how and what you would use for a modern power steering set up that isnt rack and pinion on a 57 hawk?

If you used another make's Power Steering setup, wouldn't you be right back to where you are now? Just another built into the Gearbox Power steering gear, no advantage at all, after all that "converting"!
