  • 6-Volt Tachometer

I own a Studebaker with a Tach. and it works well. A friend has another Speedster with a Tach. that is'nt working. After reviewing the 1955 Shop Manual and finding no info at all I decided to post.

Does anyone have a Shop Manual suppliment or trouble shooting service book that covers the Stude 6-volt-Positive Ground Tachometer that they could copy or post for me. Of course I would cover costs.

    Thanks, Murray

    Murray,

check my web site and also this site

I don't believe that there's any functional difference between a Speedster and a Hawk tach, the only thing I'm not sure about is if the connections for the harness are the same. The sending unit should be similar and the head functions in a similar manner.

    good luck

Were there any Hawks that were 6 volt Pos ground? This may be part of the problem. .....

Thanks Nate, That helps but I'm still a little confused about the reference to 55 Speedster and later Hawks. As far as I know the 55 Studes were the last to use the 6-Volt system. Can I infer from the diagram that the Tach doesnt care about voltage or polarity ?
        Any help appreciated.

If I've understood what I've read, you are correct. I don't know about minor cosmetic differences in the font used for the numerals and other print, but I'm pretty sure I've read of later model Hawk tach heads being used in a Speedster. The heads are supposed to be voltage agnostic.
I finally have a Stude I can drive! (sort of)

Great stuff here but I wonder if there are any Forum members that have retrofitted a 12 Volt HaWK Tach into a 6-volt Studebaker?

            Thanks Guys, Murray
