Hawk Power Steering

Hey Guys,

I've just purchased a second hand power steering outfit for my '62 Hawk, (it came off another '62 Hawk). I've noticed there is about 3/8" travel on the pitman arm ball joint that goes into the control mechanism. Is this due to spring loading, or wear ? If it's wear and needs an overhaul, are overhaul kits available ?

The area you are talking about is basically a valve that changes the
flow of pressure for a right or left turn. The control valve is on
the end of the pitman arm. It has to move back and forth a little to
redirect, and most of that slop will go away when the system is been
charged by the power steering pump. Now thats not to say that this
part ISNT worn. At the very least I would purchase the seal kit and
redo it BEFORE putting it on the car. At least you wont have leaks.

While you are at it .. do the pump and power ram also.

EDIT : I started a thread on rebuilding the pump, its work in process,
I have had issues with the seal, but it seems an exact replacement to
the original seal doesnt exist.

What sbca96 said; Yes, most of that slop should disappear once the engine is running. Also, if you are subject to a government safety inspection, be prepared to have to start the car and show this to the inspector after he tells you that he's about to fail your car for all that slop!
