New-Stude's question here (my shop manual hasn't yet arrived):

Can anyone tell me how many tire bolts are on a 1949 2R5? And what size tires fit stock rims?

I just bought a Studebaker project on eBay and can't tell from the picture what I'll need to replace the dry rotted tires so she'll roll.

    Thanks, guys.

Bolt pattern on all Stude 1/2 ton trucks 1941-64 is 5 bolts on 5" diameter circle. You can't use just any wheels because of the shape of the Stude brake drums, but some other wheels will fit. Car wheels after 1950 or so were 5 bolts on 4.5" circle (some Champs had 4 bolts).

Here's a printable wheel bolt hole gauge in a PDF file. Just print it out with scaling set to "NONE".

Rims are 16" diameter, 4.5" wide. Standard tire size is 6.00-16, 6-ply rating. Optional tire is 6.50-16, 6-ply. The 6.00-16 tires are big enough.

Gary, I thought 15"X6" wheels were standard.[:I] 16s were optional.

BTW, last I checked, SASCO still had new 16"X4.5" truck wheels. Part# 1690461 at $117 each

Their online search engine shows 15"X5" wheels - part#1693004 - available at $105 apiece.

You're right, Biggs! [:0] [V] The 2R5 shop manual and the supplements don't mention 15 inch wheels but there they are in the parts catalog. Canadian 2R5s and the 3/4 ton trucks (2R6 etc.) came with the 16" wheels.

As one nevers knows what a previous owner may have done, the safe thing for Carolyn to do would be to ask what size tires/wheels are actually on the truck. Mine came with 15's on one end and 16's on the other!

If they are 15x6" wide rims, then I think the original tire size was 7.10-15. Looks like a 215-75R15 or 225-75R15 car tire would be the current radial tire with about the same diameter (28") so the speedometer reads correctly. Any other suggestions on tire sizes?

Are the 15x5 wheels (p/n 1693004) at SASCO car wheels (5 on 4.5' circle) or truck wheels (5 on 5" circle)?

They're truck wheels, Gary. shown as wheels for a 62 & later Champ but they should work just fine on earlier trucks.
