  • Greased Lightnin' Now A '57 Stude!

    Critics' picks for the week
    07/23/2006
    STAGE
"Grease": A 1957 Studebaker is among the stars of "Grease," the new production at Stages St. Louis. Stages bought the car on eBay for $600 and spent another $1,500 to turn it into Greased Lightnin', one of the very few vehicles in all of musical theater to inspire a song all its own. (Those that share the distinction include "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top" in "Oklahoma!" and the "Meet Me in St. Louis" trolley that goes "Clang! Clang! Clang!")

An immensely popular celebration of teenage life in the 1950s, "Grease" is in previews now, opens Wednesday at 8 p.m. and runs through Aug. 20. Stages St. Louis performs in the Robert G. Reim Theatre at the Kirkwood Civic Center, 111 South Geyer Road. General admission tickets are $45, with many discounts available. For tickets or more info: 314-821-2407 or www.stagesstlouis.org. Seems to me that I saw something sometime ago about that play. In the article was a pic of the cast in and around a Studebaker- I think it was a '56 sedan...

If you guys recall, there was a front half of a '57 or '58 sedan that was on e-bay twice in the past year. It was being sold by a dinner theater in WV that had used it as a prop for a production.

            Mr. Biggs,

It was actually the front equivelant of a "half-assed car". Do you know what term we would use for that??? [}] My fading memory tells me that it got no bid the first time and went for the opening bid the second ($450 or $500). Seemed steep to me for what one would get.
