  • Factory Air Conditoning in 55-58 V8 Sedans

Does anyone have one or pictures of the set up of the trunk mount air conditioning system?

Many, many years ago, father had a 55 President so equipped and I would like to recreate the set up in a 57 President Classic with power windows.

Mr. Biggs, didn't I see a post where you once had a 55 Commander equipped with air conditioning? Any old pictures of it?

    Thank you

    Bill (Avantiguy)

Yes, I've parted out 3 or 4 with the trunk-mounted Novi A/C units. Fact is, I have a complete unit out of a 57 Packardbaker sedan. I was fortunate enough to find a fella that had parted out such a car and I got the PS setup and the A/C unit out of it. I suppose you would like some photos, no?

Mr. Biggs, that would be great if you could supply some photos. Do you have photos of some of the actual cars too? From what I remember, the system was very similar to a regular NOVI trunk unit but instead of the red NOVI emblem, a Studebaker Car Coolant System tag or something like that replaced the NOVI emblem.

You say you parted 3 or 4 of the units. Do you know the history of the cars and of the owners who ordered their cars air conditioned? Were they Presidents, President Classics or Commanders? Any other notable options you remember the cars having? Dad's was a dealer's personal car from the largest dealership in Charlotte, NC. It had all options except the back windows were manual with the front ones powered. A 56 President Classic with air & all electric window controls (black and white paint scheme) was what the dealer replaced the 55 with.

      Thanks

Bill, I'd never given it any thought 'til you asked, but all of the A/C'd cars of this era that I've dealt with were Commanders! Go figure.

This one says Packard or some such on it. I'll get some shots.

The only Studebaker factory installed A/C units of this period that I remember seeing were two in 1956 President Classic models and one in a 1957 President Classic. I would imagine that they were efficient at cooling with those translucent tubes running up to the roof area. The only similar system that I had was a 1963 Dodge Custom 880 where the A/C exited from vents in the top of the dash that blew out along the roof. The earliest model Studebaker that I had with factory A/C was a 1960 sedan, but of course that was the large box under dash unit.

            Hi
There was a '58 Packard sedan on ebay a year or so ago that had the A/C unit intact shown in the pictures. It was a black sedan in rough shape, in Georgia or Alabama. Maybe Ebay has an archive that you could access.

A '56 President Classic, fully loaded with air! Sounds just like the perfect car! Hope it is still hidden in a garage just waiting to be discovered.

There is a 55-58 air conditioning repair and parts manual on ebay right now, It seems to have detailed pictures of all the parts. Look in the parts section for 1955 Studebaker.

Here are a few shots I took the other afternoon. The car was a 54 XXX, believe it or not, original condition....

                  How's this:

A couple of years back we went to a swap meet and saw a 57 Commander 4 door that needed complete restoration. It was 100% complete and the guy didn't want too much for it. It had the NOVI system. Cool setup! No, we didn't buy it.
