  • Need to know Gross Vehicle Weight for 63 Avanti R1

Hey all, in order to run a GTechProRR test with my Avanti, to get a
baseline HP rating, I need to know the Gross Weight. I am guessing
its about 3450 pounds. It is a stripped base Avanti, no A/C, 3 spd
manual trans, and I have aluminum wheels. I think I read that a 64
Avanti with supercharger weighed in at 3600 pounds.

I am doing a 60-0 braking distance test with the Mustang GT brakes
before putting the Cobra brakes on probably next weekend.

Will be interesting to see what HP is has. Rated : 240. Real : 190?

    Any input?

    Tom

Subject: [avanti] Weighed my '63 R2 today & car show fun

I had noticed several different weights given for the Avanti, so I
decided to see what my '63 weighed in on a certified scale.

With a full tank of fuel it was 3,630 lbs, with 2,090 lbs over the
front wheels. Once 160 lbs of fuel weight is subtracted that leaves
    3,470 for the car itself.

    Car details:
R2, 4 speed manual trans, power brakes, power steering, power
    windows, aftermarket wire wheels.

It was a little bit more total weight than I had hoped for, but with
less front end weight than I had expected.

Today I also went to an early morning car show. A fair number of
people knew what they were looking at - but I did have one numskull
provide entertainment with off the wall questions and comments. He
wanted to know if mine had a Monte Carlo frame. I patiently
explained that it was not until the mid '80's that other than
Studebaker style frames were used. He still had a hard time grasping
why my '63 didn't have a mid '80's Monte Carlo frame. Even after I
pointed to my 8.5" x 11" display card with "1963" clearly printed out
he still had difficulty understanding. He also grilled me about how
fast I had driven the car. When I said that on the freeway I've done
maybe 80 mph max, he insisted on knowing what I've done flat out on
the top end. He said that if Andy Granatelli had gone 158 mph in
a "stock" R2, that he wanted to know if I had backed it up! So I
told him that sadly, I had not been asked along to Jean Nevada or
Bonneville for top end speed runs in '62-'63

Thanks, I think that "Thomas" might have posted some of that info on
one of the forums. Anyone from the Avanti Yahoo group really should
get their butts over to the AOAI forum instead - thats what its for.
The AOAI forum is WAY too slow in posts, Avanti owners are doing them
selves a dis-service by not utilizing the forum format available.

So then I guess 3450 would be too high, the supercharger has got to
weight 50 to 100 pounds, no power windows, cant afford a full tank of
premium at 3.60 a gallon .. so maybe 3380? Of course that info didnt
include if it was with or without driver. So back up to 3450.....?

Wonder what the weight difference between the auto and the 3 spd is.
Maybe under 3400 pounds? If thats the case, then 3550 with me in it?[:I]

That sounds like a good number to start with.

The SN60 Paxton is lighter than you think: smallish impeller, diecast magnesium case etc. It weighs 24 lbs. The cast iron bracket weighs ~ 11 lbs. The power window lift motors are ~ 7 lbs each. I'm not sure on the difference in weight between your 3 speed manual trans and the PowerShift trans, maybe 30 lbs.

You will waste more time trying to "guess" your car's weight than the time to simply drive over to the nearest certified scale - trust me, there are scales near you. I always weigh my cars with a full tank because it is so easy to subtract weight for a partially filled tank.

If I remember right your engine has not yet received the R3 heads and cam, right?

Even is "as new" condition, there was not a single R1 that put out 240 hp to the rear wheels. Besides, the old '60's era "gross" horsepower was normally an optimistic figure meant to help sell more cars. Gross horsepower, as measured in the early '60's would have been measured with no air cleaner, no mufflers, no power accessories - even the alternator was removed! Often times the water pump was not being driven by the engine either, plus a special "dyno only" ignition advance curve. In my mind the engine hp at the flywheel is interesting but useless info - it is the power that makes it to the ground that counts.

Better yet take it to the drags - the dragstrip tells the true story.

I know there is one at the dump, but I doubt it will give me much of
an accurate number. Other then that, I dont know of any.

Its a completely stock R1. Speed parts are "waitin" in the garage.

Thats why I said 190, the "old" numbers and the "new" numbers just do
not match up. Even though the stock R1 is no "wimp", there is no way
that it has 240 hp when compared to my LT1 Impala's 260 hp.

True, but the closest one to me is 3 hours away![xx(] I wanted to get
out there and test the Avanti today, but the darn thing has no freakin
cigarette lighter!! I have no way of running power. I bought an add
on one at Pepboys, and will put it on sometime this week. I also want
to have my wife take some pictures of it breaking from 60, but she has
lost the camera. I sware that I cant catch a break![B)]

Scrap dealers usually have scales, but I wouldn't trust their accuracy. The best bet, and usually certified, is to go to a moving company (as in household goods). They charge by weight and use their scales on a daily basis. It usually costs $20 for a certified weight printed out. If you are nice to them, you can probably get a look at the scale read out for free (without the print out). I used to use a scale when the business was closed, because you could still see the scale read out head through the office window and the scale itself was outside of the fenced yard.

                  For the record-
Shipping weights from Studebaker Service Letter S-1047 of June 5, 1962:

                  1963 Avanti: 3140 lbs (3195 lbs w/supercharger)
Add for water, oil and gasoline: 174
                  Auto trans: 17
                  4-spd trans: subtract 5
                  Power brakes: 9
                  Power steering: 40
                  Air conditioning: 82
                  Radio & antenna: 10
                  HD front springs: 2
                  HD rear springs: 8

Service Letter S-1050(a) of October 4,1962 changed the base weight to 3195 and provides no info on superchargers.
It also changed or added these weights:
                  Water, oil, and gas: 150
                  Auto trans: 21
                  Heater: 19
                  Air conditioning: 90 (est)

Service Letter G-1964-3 of Sept 27, 1963 states that the base weight of 1964 Avantis is 3195 and provides this addditional data:
Add for JTS and RS: 55
                  R-3: 65
                  R-4: 10

By no means a complete list of dragstrips in California, but its a start - and maybe there is one nearer to you that you are unaware of.
