Hello all,
Now that I'm home for the summer, it is time to do some much needed repair work on the Commander. The car is in great shape so I am just replacing a hose here and fixing a clock there. Anyhow, the dash on my car is virtually perfect - I was even told by one of the judges at a national meet that it is one of the nicest originals he has ever seen. While it is nice, it has a minor 1/2 in to 3/4 inch long split in it. My concern is that it will continue to spread. At a 1/2 inch every 40 years, Im not too concerned. But I was wondering if anyone has ever found a way to prevent the spread of dash cracks in these cars? Any ideas would be great. If it was your car, what would you do?

Thanks,
Nate

If it's a split by the speaker at the left bottom corner, I think they all do that. I don't know if that could be repaired by Dr. Vinyl or not. Sasco still has 64-66 dash covers available in green that can be dyed if it bothers you that much.

Apply Armor-All on a regular basis. It blocks UV rays that age the vinyl.

BTW, I treat the vinyl windows in convertibles (inside and out) with this stuff. Even tho you wipe it to where you can't tell it's there, my windows have NOT yellowed with age, nor gotten brittle.[:0] Not even in this mean, ol' California sun![}:)]

Thanks Cruiser and Biggs,
The small crack doesn't bother me at all...however, I want to keep it small. I will do the Armor-All treatment. If I take it to car shows where it will be in the sun, I put a window shade up to keep the dash cool. I guess thats all that can be done. Oh, and Biggs, you nailed the spot right on - its right by the speaker.

Also, for everyday use, you might wanna have one of those custom-fitted covers made - the kind that basically sit on top of the dash pad.;)

In the summer of 2002 at the North Central Zone Meet in Gering, Nebraska a fellow with a 1965 Cruiser from New Mexico had a custom-made dash pad that I believe he said he ordered through Pep Boys for a minimal price (I forget what it was). Might be worth looking into! My 1963 Cruiser dash has a small crack also...same place as everyone else's...to the left of the speaker running "southwest!"
