Interesting thing about fiberglass bodied cars do to electrolytic effect all the rust takes place in what ever metal is there.
Examples:

Went to wash the 10 years of dirt off the cheap Avanti and tried to roll up the passenger window. Turns out, the frame piece that hold the glass at the bottom was swollen with rust and binding up the works. The P.O. must have tried too because he busted the regulator, and cracked the fiberglass on the inside of the door. I grabbed a good used window and regulator, repaired the fiberglass and put everything back together. Now after four hours of labor, I still need to wash the car.

OK moving on, time to bolt a new starter switch on the inner fender. Again, rust in action. I had to drill out the broken screws and retap.

Next, install parking light sockets, surprise the bulbs are frozen in the sockets. Got them out with some pliers, cleaned out the sockets with a battery brush and then had to drill out the mounting screws. The good news is I now have parking lights and turn signals. Next, I'll install the headlight buckets, no telling what will happen there.

This is on the "cheap" Avanti? Does it run?

1963 Studebaker Avanti (http://hometown.aol.com/sbca96/images/63avanti.jpg), 102,000, custom made brake brackets to mount 1998 Mustang GT 4 wheel disc brakes (soon to get 13" Cobra front brakes, 2003 Mustang Cobra 17" wheels, GM altenator, will be getting : 97 Camaro Z28 tan leather seats, 97 Camaro Z28 T-56 6-speed trans, Ported 'R3' style Avanti heads with stainless full flow valves, 'R3' 276 duration cam w/chrysler solid lifters, shortened push rods, aluminum cam gear, Edelbrock AFB Carb, GM HEI distributor, 8.8mm plug wires, waiting in the garage.

Not running yet. The engine is out of the car, spins over fine, good oil pressure, 170 pounds of compression.

John/JDP - Keep in mind what part of the country that you got this car from. The rust doesn't surprise me at all. I remember one 1963 Avanti that was on its third frame by the '70s.

The car was only in NY for a few years. The hog troughs are perfect. I think the rust is from sitting and staying damp.

Dang! You STOLE that car! BTW .. whats "good" oil pressure on an R1
anyway? My oil pressure is what I consider "good" when its cold, but
at idle when its warm it drops pretty low. It jumps back up when you
give it gas though. I am used to the LT1 readings now, I forgot what
the oil pressure was in a Stude.[:I]

This one has only been checked cranking since the engine is not in the car yet. (30 PSI)

I know of a pretty decent (even drove it) 38 Commander 4 door that lives in FL, but originally lived in NY. This car has never been redone, only the fenders have been repainted, many years ago. The owner reaplace all the glass rubber, and found NO rust!!! The car's never been wrecked and has never has any body work. And solid as a rock too. There are still some out there...

We've all heard the many slogans Studebaker used over the years. "The Thrifty One for 51," or "Different...By Design, and "First by Far With a Postwar Car." Add another one by many of us who know:

"Studebaker....Rust Never Sleeps!"

Many years ago, I had a chance meeting with the guy that came up with the "First by far with a postwar car" slogan. Cathy and I were travelling from NY to IN for an SDC International Convention in a '53 Commander Starliner. We were having breakfast in western PA and parked out in the back corner of the lot. When we came out, there was a group by our car (one extended family). The grandfather stated that he worked for the advertising company for Studebaker. When I mentioned the First by far slogan, he nearly fainted. He couldn't believe that anyone would remember any of his work after all these years. I exchanged information with him. A couple of months later, he sent me his copy of the Studebaker postwar production line article from Life magazine. Fred K. Fox tried to contact him for an article. The man had died in the meantime.
