The odds are good. Unlike a lot (most?) of the Stude cars selling on eBay going to first time Stude owners, this engine will sell to someone who knows (and appreciates) Studes.

I think before I consider your's or any other shiney goodies I must first get the frame completed and the body back on it. Then I will see if the ole 259 is still agreeable to start again and then.... you get the idea. I'm along ways from chrome...[V] But on a more serious note and as you all know I have no idea, but for the 16,000.00 dollars already bid couldn't you just take a 289 and make it a R-3 and please be kind I'm still learning here.[:I]

Hi, RandyG,

Read all of Nimesh's description carefully. The heads, pistons, rods, oil pan, and on and on are different than a regular 289" and are not regularly for sale at any price.

You can, however, make a regular 289" look like an R3 and none but the most knowlegable Studiste will know the difference (and believe me, it has been done more than once, and will be again at South Bend in June.)

thnx, jv.

Hi guys,
that motor would really make a big change to anyone driving a 6 cylinder Studebaker Lark or Hawk.

I wonder what it would do to to the performance cababilities of my 1930's cars. I would bet I could use the trunk of the car in front as a break.

In the early 1990's I remember borrowing a friends R3 powered Avanti in LA and taking a guy out and peeling rubber in all 4 gears. Hey, it wasnt my car or my rubber, but boy was it a LOT of fun if you are not afraid of giving the car all it was made to give you. It certainly brought smiles to our faces and since the other guy had only had 6 cylinder Studebakers, the mouthwatering performance was about the most fun one could have with your cloths still on. Mind you, my freind who owned the car pulled onto an LA freeway in the same car and had it motoring in ways that an R2 Avanti just cant do.

If you are a genuine Stude dude and you have the loose cash available, an R3 would be a good investment and a hell of a lot of fun if you wanted to use it in your Studebaker street machine.

It is also a great want to loose your licence, but in the 1990's when I was in my mid 20's I really did not care so much.

Good luck blokes, those R3's are one mean motor.

I'll agree with Greg. Though I've never actually driven it, (The owner said I had to be 18. :D) I have been given a few rides in a '64 Avanti with a real-deal R3 under the hood. The guy that owns it was VERY willing to show me what the car was made of, and it's nothing like a standard 289; that R3 had some mean raw power. (And we kept the windows up, to keep the back glass in the car. ;))
And to think that that couldn't be topped, I got to ride in a '63 Avanti with a R4 clone engine under the hood...
That was a fun day. :D[8D]

One day if I ever get the cash, I'm gonna have a Stude with a R3. Maybe when I restore my Daytona again in 20-30 years. :) <g>

Erin, you've found me out! However, my swarthy Italian tan doesn't look so hot after the long, cold winter we've had. I've been eyeballing your Studes for quite some time now and while it's true I drive like a schoolgirl, it's just that I can't afford to mess up my hair. I'd really appreciate it if you'd install AC in the Hawk so I can go fast and keep my beautiful hair in place at the same time. I told your wife how badly I want that R3 engine, so she's started spiking your prune juice with antifreeze and it shouldn't belong now.

Have a good day!

Gentlemen:

I am the individual who purchased the R-3 engine. Nimesh is bringing the engine to South Bend for me to bring it back to NY. I am a car collector, new to Avantis' but have always wanted to own one. I also purchased the low mileage 1964 R-1 with approx. 4,000 orig miles. Odometer does work and mileage is accurate. Car is presently on display at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton NY for a Raymond Loewy Exhibit thru May 27th. I will then drive the car to South Bend. See you there.

My 2 cents:

Having an all original 4000 mile Avanti is something to preserve. I myself (please don't take me as trying to tell you what to do) would be inclined to leave the Avanti as it has been all these years and put the R3 into another Stude. Like I said, my 2 cents.

Speaking of Nemesh engines, I just took my first test drive of the R2 GT I bought from him, and restoring. He built it with his special heads that actually out flow the R3 heads. Man, does that car haul the mail. Here's some older pix, the seats are in now, still needs body work and paint.

Ed's custom built R4 with Paxton. He has a spare new Paxton in his garage but no room in this engine compartment to hook-up as a dual unit - R5.

Man, same here. Got all excited for nothing. I thought it all looked familiar.

So did the car make it to South Bend?

Is this the car currently on EBay that currently has 9769 miles? In the ad it says it had 4524 miles when he got it. Closer reading shows the same name for the seller.
