Has anyone repainted the gold anodizing in the centers of the hubcaps for the Speedsters? I had all of my stainless polished and the gold in the center of the hubcaps came off. I'd like to repaint/replace it. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

I found this on an old post:

    VHT-PJH Brands, Scottsdale, AZ 85285-3328

The product is a spray can, Translucent Metal Tint coating, SP-233 Gold.

This is a product that simulates anodized color on aluminum. On polished stainless it is a nearly transparent gold color, if applied sparingly. If overdone it looks brassy.

The stainless should be cleaned with Lacquer Thinner or similar product before painting, and well masked.

John Bridges' book states; "Gold paint is not correct. The best refinish for the center is a light coating of Metal Tint #SP-233 Gold."

Does anyone have a picture of a correct '55 Speedster hubcap? I have the correct tint, but I don't know which part of the hub cap gets the gold tint?

            Thanks,

            Jim

Maybe I'm up for a lesson here, but I've had a good number of these caps pass thru my hands over the years. I don't ever recall seeing a hint of gold coloration on the Speedster center caps. Neither have I seen it on any repop caps. Regular 55 full disc and bottlecap caps - yes. Speedster center caps - no.[:I]

Take a look at Richard Quinn's Speedster article in the Oct. 98 issue of Collectible Automobile. The pictures are in color so the gold shows vary well. Most of Studebakers lit. was in black and white, but you can still see a color change in the centers. The color ad. "Lighting on Wheels", shows a gold centers also.
I have had several used sets of these cap and also seen vary little color on then but I don't think the combinatoin of factory prep. or years of polishing did the tint any favors.

I have a couple of original caps. They are a two piece assemblage with a steel inner and stainless outer shell. There is still some gold noticeable. I also have some older repros and four new ones. They are a single piece of stainless with no inner shell. The small center circle and three spokes are tinted gold.
