You know, it'll be nice (in just about this respect only) to be out of booneyville and back in the big city. You know, where the mail is actually delivered by motorcar? Sometimes, I think it must come from Redding up to here by horse and buggy.

In otherwords, probably not for another week.:([8]

Not here in OZ either, I could get it sooner but it seemed a little expensive to pay for airmail delivery.

Just a bit south of the BerStuda triangle, there's another zone known as the "postal mazeian trapezoid". Mail goes there - whirls around for an indeterminate chunk of time - encounters angry machines that masticate periodicals until they meet a certain standard of shreddedness. Once they've ruminated to a point that satisfies the Grand Postal Troll, they're dispatched to any remaining addresses that might still cling to the ravaged covers.
Studebaker goat wagons are still tie primary mode of inter-zip zone transport out here and the goats are alloted a certain fraction of their payload to assure delivery of the balance. Junk mail - being as important as it is to various "Residents", is kept from the goat's daily intake. Less important things like magazines and checks are favorite fare for rams and ewes.
Does anyone know for sure if TW has gone BI-monthly??? I only get one every other month or so![V]

Haven't seen my March copy yet (as of Thursday) and I wouldn't mind it if the mailman did read it first but I'm really not fond of it being delivered bent half in two. Course it is one of those situations where if you complain things just get worse--maybe in other areas but they have a way of getting even. Oh, I'm in S. Dakota where Studes are RARE.

They are mailed in bulk (2nd class, not the others), so your name has nothing to do with it. The fact that it was the first issue for you probably did have something to do with it. See how it goes from here on.

Hi Guys: I'm in PA and do not yet have the March issue. I must admit tho that they have been pretty good delivering them prior to the month printed on them. My complaint is the condition of them when they arrive, torn covers, missing pcs, 'ground' edges, turned corners, etc. I have been a member since 1967 and have ALL the bulletins, magazines, special issues, etc., all in mint condition. In order to maintain the status quo, every time an issue arrives mutilated, I contact SDC and ask for a replacement issue. I have talked to Mark Wheeler several times about the possibility of sending them in wrappers, similar to AOA. He says that each time he brings this up at the national board meetings, it is shot down. I would 'assume' it is quite expensive to supply replacement issues, considering the envelope and mailing. However, he says that there aren't that many replacements sent each month. DO NOT put up with mutilated magazines. Each time one arrives in other than mint condition, email Mark Wheeler at Cornerstone Registration and ask for a replacement copy. Perhaps if we all did this instead of accepting mutilated copies, things would change.

Got mine last week. Of course, it was bent in half and the cover was a little tattered, as usual. However, having spent several three-month field seasons working in Central America and the Brazilian Amazon, I have to say the American postal service does pretty good. I often beat letters sent to my wife and kids home by a month or two.

Most of what we got this week was property tax bills. I guess the magazines sit in the post office until the Letter Carrier can recover from the hernia created by the tax bills.

John: I couldn't resist this one. Perhaps your dog club magazine is 'going to the dogs'. HA. The AOA (Avanti Owners Asso) plus several other magazines I receive come in a clear sealed plastic bag. I have NEVER received one of those in poor condition and the contents are pristine. I must agree with one other members comment, I think the US postal system does an incredible job. I have to think that the core problem rests with the method the mags are entered into the bulk postal system. I assume bulk carries a 'special' rate and is not afforded the same care or expedited service that first class is offered.

Not yet. I should be getting my first issue soon though. It'll arrive torn apart, with no cover and half the pages missing if it isn't delivered to someone else. Our postal carrier lacks the ability to read, unfortunately. :P We usually end up going around delivering the neighborhood mail ourselves.

Guard: Where are you going in such a hurry?

Not true Clark, when I lived in Ramona, I would get it
prior to the 1st of the month, via the pony express rider,
on his way to Escondido and O'side.

Hi, Some of you have received your March TW as early as the 23th. I'm not sure that you want to brag about this as you must be paying the hefty first class rate to get it THAT early. And my vote is on the side of those saying that the post office as well as most government offices do an exemplary job under difficuly conditions. Remember the old sage Indian who said never criticize someone unless you have walked a mile in his/her moccasins. Please do not read this as a put down to someone (anyone) who would offer criticism about our government, it is just that I worked for UNCLE for many years and have seen the situation from the inside which gives an entirely different perspective from that viewed from the outside. :D:D

To all members who received a mangled TW:

I've been a SDC member since 1968 and I have NEVER received an issue of Turning Wheels in torn or mangled condition. I could be lucky, who knows.
Anyway, if you receive a copy that is not in good condition, please contact Cornerstone Registration and ask Mark to send you a good one. It will be done at no extra cost to you.
Failing all of that or if you are unable to do that for some reason, contact me and I will get a good copy to you.

Thru the years I've recieved covers ONLY! More than once! Also, TWs with really mangled to only minor mangled (in fact, just a couple of months back)covers. Mostly, they get here OK. I did spring for the first class delivery for a couple of years. ONE CAR that I scored because of having my TW early, netted me a $4K profit! But that was before most everyone had wised up to ebay. I went back to bulk mail delivery in recent years.[^]

The bulk mailing of 2nd class postage issues all get deposited at the same Post Office in Virginia on the same day. From there, you are at the mercy of the USPS. I believe that 2nd class mail does not get the same priority that 1st class mail gets. If speedy delivery and an issue protected by an envelope is important to you, then you have to step up to a first class mail membership. The extra cost for 1st class mailing covers the costs of the envelope, handling and postage. The SDC Board has studied different mailings and protective covers many times. It usually boils down to a cost issue for the number that we mail.

Still no March TW in S. Dakota......but the blizzard conditions we had late last week might have had something to do with the lateness. Perhaps tomorrow (Monday) it will arrive. I can't help but mention that a few monthe back a gentleman sent in a letter to the TW editors complaining about all the TW articles on Avantis, but never anything on HIS favorite Studebaker model. He must be getting an entirely different TW than I see because I cannot ever recall seeing a TW article on Avantis in the approximately five years of my (current) SDC membership. Oh well, you can't satisfy everyone.

Please let me know directly when you get it.
I fought for years to get faster delivery for overseas ( costly dues)members(I got mine in England in six weeks) and thought that the problem was solved by bulk posting to an intermediate address. It seemed to be working for a while, with some folks overseas getting their copy before I got mine, via land-mail, back here in California again.

Just got back from York and in my absence my wife had placed it in the den. The cover looks like a scene I would have out back of my house if I lived out west! Looks like a Farquhar or Hardee sprayer in the middle and perhaps a Red River Thresher in the background? Dick, how about a little help on this?

None here at my Fresno home yet. This is normal. Weather delays? Well, it's been about 70 degrees for three days now...

Let me tell you how I received mine for many years. We live in a newer suburban neighborhood. We had a "community repository" or some such name the P.O. comes up with. Each block has one big mail box divided up into locking pigeon holes for each house. Letter carrier comes up, unlocks the back, sorts (sort of[V]) into each slot, and is gone. Here's the problem. Each person's box is about 4"x4" by 12" deep. This works for "Vertical" format magazines--curl or slightly roll the magazine, it goes right in. Turning Wheels is "Horizontal" format. The letter carriers here for years would try to fold it with the crease going from left to right, crushing, breaking, and destroying the spine of the magazine:(:(:(:(:(. This went on for about 5-6 years!:(:(:( Then, try to remove it out the front locking door which has a smaller opening than what the letter carrier forced it into in the back. So the magazine is still trying to resume it's original shape, (flat) which forces it against opposite corners of the box. Decision: shred your hand or TW against the sharp metal edges of the mail box[?][?][?] So, I have about six years of issues with buckled, distorted, mangled covers. But things are better now. Now they fold it in half top-to-bottom.

Karl,
I tried to send this via PM, but you have one of those annoying spam filters that bounces most everything.

I think I'd really enjoy your posts, but I don't understand most of them. Perhaps just read them once to make sure they make sense?

(maybe they do and I'm just too dense to understand them :))

In the late 1960s, in Boston, I bought black 61 like yours for a winter car. I gave it a quick look over in the twilight, drove it, and was pleased at what I was getting my $100. It even had AT for easier winter traction.

About a week later I felt a bump on the floor, bent down and discovered a clutch pedal was the bump. I pulled on it and the sector rose out of the floor with the pedal.

Someone had switched to a auto tranny and hadn't even bothered to remove the pedal portion of the clutch linkage!

The car served me well fr a couple of winters and I made someome else happy by selling it to him. Nice car.

Lets make this an even 100 responses.....
I went down to the Verde Canyon RR stop in
Perkinsville to see if by chance the station
agent had any mail for me.....namely my TW's.
The agent looked, but as usual, the TW is still
sight unseen, in this part of the "Zone".....

Greg, A friend of mine contacted me when he saw a Stude advertised for sale in your area. I described you fully, but, nevertheless, suggested that he might be safe buying it from you.

Has it been sold?

Two other questions:
What's the cost of the standard TV licence now?
What's the cost of electricity, both daytime and "economy 7?"

I finally got mine today. After enduring a few snide remarks from my grandfather (who doesn't think I'll ever do anything to my Stude, much less restore it), I found that this one issue completely justified the price of joining the SDC. Very little I need isn't in there, and nothing is missing when you consider I'm not fully restoring it just yet, just intending to get it into a running, driving condition. And that's ignoring the articles and pictures.

Condition was ok, the cover was scuffed along the edges and bent, but oh well. It's still in better shape than most of my magazines, which get tossed around until they find their way into a drawer.

Guard: Where are you going in such a hurry?
Gorrak the ranger: Uhhh...Gorrak have quiche in oven!!
Guard: well hurry along.

Of course as soon as I get home there is the latest TW. With my wife showing me the super sweet '61 Hawk saying" Now,There's My Studerbaker!". Great. My '63 Avanti is now chopped liver. LOL. I love the cover,it reminds me of what I used to see up in NoDak. Richard

Finally got my TW March issue (I have to clarify the month because the people who get theirs first class are expecting the April issue just about now, ha,ha) yesterday (Tuesday the 13th). That is a nice looking Hawk on the back cover, but what's with the missing directional signals, Erin? I didn't know there was a state that didn't require them.:D:D:D
wagone and the old R2 Avanti (missing more than dir. signals to be as nice as that Hawk looks to be)

The rate it is heading yes. i got my june issue of car craft yesterday. maybe TW will trun into 11 issues a year...lol

you know we joke about it, but would you want to do all the work involved in putting that kind of mag out? they do a good job, sometimes just running a little late.

Ditto....It is out of their hands once it goes in the USPS
distribution system (no offense to our forum carriers). So
if it doesn't show tomorrow, an email to Cornerstone is in
order, I guess......Mr. B, was that your February issue you
got yesterday???? Never heard back....so it must have been
March or the 2 came as 1.

Erin,

Thanks for the reply on the missing directional signals and for not thinking I was being a smart a** (my wife would be the first to tell you I'd NEVER do that--not to someone I didn't know, at least). That is a nice looking Hawk. Good job!

Still waiting in Kansas City. :( Asked the mailman last Saturday if they had a policy of when to deliver bulk rate mail here in KC. Comment was "No policy....Depends on if the bosses want to pay overtime at the main sorting station here. They've had some problems lately with that. Maybe it will come first of next week." .......Well here it is END of next week and still no show.

Day 14 - Still no TW. Don't know how much longer I'll be able to hold out. Only thing in mailbox was flyer from a grocery store. Unable to look my car in the grille.
